What's up, Chuck?

Sorry - can't do links, so this is from 'Lying in the Gutters':

"American Power," by Chuck Dixon and Greg Land, also looks like the kind of book that may raise a few eyebrows. From the Free Comic Book Day solicitation for American Power: Prequel... "America's new living weapons in the war against terror! They bomb civilians, hurt innocents, and spread fear. But those that have chosen to inflict pain will reap what they've sown! Now, the world's modern monsters will face a new, devastating and living arsenal! Supported by the technology, muscle and brainpower of the U.S. Armed Forces, the next stage in human evolution will scour the globe and deliver justice! Lock and load for high-stakes, high-explosive military action as the enhanced soldiers code-named Ivictus and Scapel"

I've heard comparisions made to that monstrosity of bad taste and bad thinking, "Civilian Justice" and there are some internally at CrossGen who aren't best pleased. Even artist Greg Land has been heard to voice displeasure at the work he's now been given to write. CrossGen are going for controversy on this one, this isn't intended as an ironic piece of comment. The content of this book is intended to be read as-is, and more in line with Chuck Dixon's political thinking.

Uh-huh. Discuss?

Chuck Dixon is one of those writers who used to be really, really good. I evidence his run on DETECTIVE COMICS, his BIRDS OF PREY RUN, *ALL* his ROBIN stories, and his NIGHTWING run (he launched Dick's solo title). When he was in his prime and working in the Bat-Universe, his stuff was primo. He even did a Prestige Format Superman story about Clark's years going around the globe doing cool shit before he became Supes that was really quite good.

But Dixon's last Nightwing, Birds of Prey and Robin issues were a little lackluster, and I could feel his mojo departing. He was just kind of losing it; his stories didn't crack and pop the fun way they used to. When he went off to CrossGen, I pretty much wrote him off.

And this American Power shit seems really, really bad. Dixon is a conservative, but I hung about on his message board for a while years back, and he always struck me as a decent, reasonably fair-minded fellow. But then he made cracks about the Rawhide Kid miniseries (the gay cowboy) that were kind of off (he said Marvel must have conned the classic artist John Severin into drawing the book, not telling Severin it was about a gay cowboy - this accusation was later proved false, Severin knew what it was about) and he's said some disparaging things about Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka, two writers who I think are very talented. So maybe he's going the John Byrne route and his quality goes down and his craziness goes up over time.

I never much cared for Dixon's work. It was all formula and no substance. His comics were so predictable that I could tell you how many pages he would mete out to fight scenes, talking heads and future subplots.

I can't name a single story he did that is memorable other than the "high concept idea" behind some of them. The actual stories themselves are so bland that anyone could have written them. Why is it that comics always tend to have a guy who writers a lot of books, all of them pretty boringly, at any one time?

Sorry, Hunter, but not only do I find Dixon's political views distasteful, I also find his writing dull, lifeless and deeply uninspired.

I don't want to expect to be able to shield my kids from the subject of homosexuality as the media seems intent on bringing into my home and nothing short of cutting the electricity and boarding the windows will stop it. But I DON'T want my kids reading about it in comics. I don't want Judd Winnick or Grant Morrison or the nimrod who wrote this 'Rawhide Kid' comic informing my kids about the many facets and lifestyle choices out there in the world. I'd like to be the one to talk to them about it when they're older and I feel the time is right. I especially object to them using characters familiar to my kids to present this worldview. Could you please leave the Beast and Green Lantern alone?

Christ, I wish I had my copy of 'Comics Writers on Comicbook Script Writing' with me.

Will write more later.

I frequented Dixon's board about 6 years ago - he was a lot more civil and less ranting then. He either was a nicer guy then or he kept his bile to himself. I've been pretty repulsed by what I've heard coming out of his mouth in the past few years, as I've said.

And for the record, I felt when he was at his best, his stuff was like a well-written fun popcorn action movie with some decent characterization thrown in. Very good for Batman and that whole world. I never thought he was a Really Amazing Writer. Just good at that niche of stuff, back a few years ago, IMO.

Well, you can rest your pretty little head, because AMERICAN POWER (or "The Gimp Lays The Smackdown On Osama," as we call it in the House of Fear) has been cancelled, in a rare triumph of good taste.

Where is this in the news? (the cancellation?) I just checked Newsarama, and there's no story about it there.

But this is good news. Dixon has clearly lost it, not much more else to say about that. I'm amazed Greg Land would let himself be pulled into such a thing. Apparently Land had some reservations about it, though...

Just found the story at www.comicon.com/pulse:

>> THE PULSE has just learned that CrossGen's upcoming series American Power written by Chuck Dixon and featuring art by Greg Land has been shelved in favor of another project Monster Rally. Sources close to CrossGen said new investors thought the book [American Power] was in poor taste. We have also learned that V.P. of Marketing and Sales, Chris Oarr resigned from the imprint this morning. When questioned, CG offered "no comment."

It's pretty vile that it got as far as it did. It does make me wonder about the politics of a number of mainstream writers. Incidentally has anyone else seen the comic 'civilian justice' that came out last year with an even more hysterical racist tone. Truly fucking gobsmacking, and check out that cover!!!
(If any kind-hearted Barbeloid wants to put a link up then feel free....)

I really tought that the comic was an ironic view of the "war on terror" bullshit. Thank gOD that CrossGen stopped this nonsense.

The guy on the 'civilian justice' cover has rather womanly curves. Perhaps he's an intersex.

Yeah, it would appear that our (well, my, anyway) national representatives are striking a blow against radical Muslims who have a problem with the sexual preferences of androgynes who like to wear leather and latex and punch guys around. (IF YOU'VE GOT A PROBLEM MOTHERFUCKER I CAN SOLVE IT WITH MY FISTS, as Mike Robot might say.) Chuck Dixon -- closet liberal, or just in the closet?

Greig!

To be honest, Greig F. Weich (for it is he who writes CJ) isn't really racist - just wonderfully oddball. He has videos of potential movies at his site (with himself in the lead roles) which MUST be seen to be believed. The Civilian Justice one goes to pains with a monolouge stating he doesn't hate muslims or arabs. He's just a crazy geek living the dream, and our world is weirder and richer for it.

http://www.beyondcomics.tv/ - dig for the movies, seriously, they've got dave fucking prowse and coolio (who WALKS ON HIS FUCKING DREADLOCKS) and they're a right fucking chuckle.

Fuck this Crossgen shit, this is fucking pseudo-racist propaganda of the lowest order.

Why is the Muslim guy on the Civilian Justice cover so angry with the woman on it anyway? She's wearing black, and she has her face covered...

It must be that whorish glimpse of naked neck which so annoys him.

I'd say that Civilian Justice presents a pretty racist outlook. I'm all for oddballs and geeks, but surely that's an inflammatory and fairly hateful piece of propoganda.

Ha ha.

I just wanted to point out that the topic abstract makes me chuckle every time I see this thread.

I actually wanted to see this comic in print. Would feel terrible paying for it though. It would've been retarded but funny. Quite like the muslim joke up there.

Good 'un chum.
