From my post in whichever Conversation thread is discussing the new look Barbelith.

...the new header for the Music Forum leaves a lot to be desired...

Pop, Rock, Soul, Opera and the Classics...

How bereft of an agenda is that? You may as well say:

For readers of Mojo, Q and Record Collector, nostalgia welcomed...

How about:

Pop, punk, hip hop and psychedelia: music and what it means to us...

Or a thousand other suggestions.

So, how else would you summarise this forum? Put your brand manager hats on, and call on Flux in his capacity as Executive Coach...

(In all other respects, the new look is wonderful. Isn't it just?)

As I said in another thread, I really miss the old "from Bowie to Britney, punk to Daft Punk" tag. You can argue that it didn't cover a very wide range, but really, c'mon, "Opera and the Classics"? That has to go. What are "the Classics", anyway?

I'm glad somebody else has started this thread so I didn't have to, but yeah, the current forum description is a bit .. inadequate. I'm sure most of my favourite records don't fall within the boundaries of "soul, pop, opera and the classics". Sounds far too tasteful.

Personally I'd just go for "noises and stuff" as a description, but I don't suppose it would fit in very well with the other forum headers..

How 'bout: "Music: chart pop to avant garde, beautiful calm to raging noise, classical to street-punk, your basement to outer space, the middle ages to next week"

It could probably do with some mention of 'sound' - I quite like yr 'noises and stuff,' Riz. I remember Flux previously mentioning that the old forum description left no room for anything other than 'music' in its straightest sense. No room for fuzz, found sounds or radio, fr example. This forum should cover all ear activity.

Have we ever talked about Opera?

We have talked about hip hop and dance music a lot, but the header would not seem to indicate that. It makes us sound way too rockist!

How about...

From Bowie to the Boredoms, N.E.R.D. to Neubauten: sound, music and its context...

More ideas, please!

Tunes, noise, radio and found sounds - aural stimulation through canal penetration.

Tunes, noise, sounds and fuzz. From primal blaspheme to Primal Scream

Or the old one. I liked the old one

I think E Randy has got it. It could use some tweaking, but that's the right way to go. I think that we should avoid naming artists and genres - that's so limiting. We should give this as much scope as possible.

Seth

Tunes, noise, radio and found sounds

Flux: agreed. The above works gangbusters.

Although I would probably add in beats as well.

Spatula Clarke
15:14 / 29.03.04
'Beats' instead of 'tunes', then? 'Beats, noise, radio and found sounds'?

'Tunes' feels a bit cool dad, and the forum being called 'Music' makes it a given that yes, tunes and songs are going to be discussed here. Trying to squeeze all five terms into the description would make it look and sound overlong and clumsy.

Matthew Fluxington
15:15 / 29.03.04
Nah, keep tunes, but add in beats.

Matthew Fluxington
15:16 / 29.03.04
Like so:

Beats, tunes, noise, radio and found sounds - aural stimulation through canal penetration.

I think "tunes" should be there to represent melody.

This thread's gone kinda quiet. Has that been settled then?

I think the from 'x' to 'y', from 'z' to '£' approach works better. I like the way it implies that there's too much to actually describe. Both the current version and the suggested alternative pin it down a bit too much for me, however broad terms like 'tunes' and 'noise' may be. They're still attempting to say what's actually in there rather than going for the more enigmatic 'who knows what you may find' angle.

Look guys - I'm more than comfortable to change that description - I threw together that description on short notice because I needed something shorter. If you don't like it, get me a better block and I'll put it up instead. Same goes for all the fora. Having said that, please make sure that it's actually descriptive in some way and that it's in no way any longer than the current one. The one you proposed above looks a little long to me (and frankly a bit esoteric).

Well, the second bit of the suggestion wasn't supposed to be taken seriously.

So:

Beats, tunes, noise, radio and found sounds.

If we're going to use Randy's suggestion, we should use it as it was I reckon (the first half anyway). It rolled off the tongue nicely. 'Beats' might add to the meaning, but it spoils the flow of it.

Matthew Fluxington
18:05 / 30.03.04
Since very few people will be reading this aloud, it may be a better idea to leave beats in, since it acknowledges a wide range of music that may seem to be excluded otherwise.

i would drop "tunes," personally. i know that's been discussed and settled, but i wasn't here then. =P

anyone have any ideas for what to call the forum itself? stay with "Music" or try to get something snazzy like "Temple" and "Laboratory"?

maybe music should get discussed in the Ear?

Spatula Clarke
19:13 / 30.03.04
diz> As far as your second point goes, that'd mean each of the Spectacle fora being renamed, too. It works as it is, I think - one style for the Revolution, one for the Spec.

Also, I don't know how you could rename Comics in the same way and make it significantly different from Books.

I'm also not all that keen on reinstating the 'From Bowie to Britney', mainly because it stands out from the rest of the forum descriptions. Unless they're all to be changed too, I think Music needs an "A, B, C and D" heading. Not necessarily the one that's already been suggested.

how about something a little less wilfully esoteric?

Music: pop, beats, guitars, noise, and anything else you hear and love.

Spatula Clarke
01:25 / 31.03.04
Yeah, I like.

Question: should the forum cover all radio content? Plays and the like? That's actually what I meant the use of the word to cover, because while they're not music, they're still sound.

Suggestion: couldn't we just change the name of the forum to Sound and have bip's tagline (with the inclusion of radio in place of, say, guitars)?

Ugh, not 'Sound', that has connotations of 'Sight and...', plus you'd only encourage the Merzbow fans. Music Saves Lives, remember - keep it MUSIC.

So..

"Beats, tunes, noise, radio and found sounds - Adventures In Contemporary Sound"?

Regrettable Juvenilia

I believe b.i.p. was being sarcastic, Adrian. "Adventures In Contemporary Sound" is an appalling tagline: joyless, pretentious, academic and bearded, much like the magazine it accompanies.

Goodness Gracious Meme

I'm afraid I was, Adrian, although faceatious is probably a better word. sorry, not helpful.

(and actually, i do read The Wire occasionally. If you can get past the massive pretension, it's pretty good. thought it was a fair comparison.)

Im aware of that, I just couldnt help myself, it sounds so freaking good.. Seriously though.. What about changing it from Music to The Basement ? I think it would fit into the general theme more, Magick changing to Temple and all..
