A great idea! Somehow that just didn't occur to me.

Ah! You have learned a way to learn a language without books or translators?!

yep.
you are already enrolled in the class that teaches language that way, its called life.

seeing the unseen is a part of magick

go to the file menu and select 'view source' to get the html make up of any webpage.
alternatively, read the wiki for the eensy weensy bit you'll need to operate on a board like this.

that, or go to www.webmonkey.com , perhaps starting with their HTML cheatsheet.

Well, I for one love the redesign. Best yet in my book, and I remember when it were all fields...

But

What happened to the search by user utility? Used to love that one.

Them were the days.

Well, nowadays you can just go to Google, put in a username next to "site:www.barbelith.com" and you'll get all instances of that username.

Very, very good point. Stupid Boboss.

Also liked the 'who's online right now?' function. Love to see that return.

I like the new board design but I REALLY miss the recent topic headlines visible on the front page.

Add another voice requesting the return of the recent topics visible on the home page.

There's a lot being missed by visitors who don't go into every section just in case there's an interesting topic, as opposed to the previous format that allowed for scanning of the newest posts of the entire site.

If this doesn't fit in with your goals for the re-design, is it possible to add this view as a preference?

I understand the work involved won't be minor, but this was one of the most signficant benefits of the site. The current design reinforces people visiting what they already know they want, polarizing the interests of the board members. The associative discovery that occured previously was more in line with the mind-expanding goals I had (and maybe other people, too) when I found Barbelith while looking for a real world Invisibles College.

Is there any way to remove a topic once you've posted it? Something weird happened when I put a topic up in "Film and TV" and my topic was posted twice. I don't wish to cause needless confusion among potential posters.

woodtiger - Yes. When you go into the topic, to the bottom left there will be an 'Edit Topic' button, and you can propose to delete one of the doubles there. It still has to be approved by someone else though, so for that time it's probably worth posting to the bottom of the one ot be deleted saying that you've proposed it for deletion and that people should reply to the other thread.

There are no books in life? What are these things on my shelves, then?

[Sorry for threadrot, I couldn't help it]

...like the one that is disguised as 'find out more'.

I am not having a very clever posting day.

Little thing, but something saying "The time is..." on each page would be handy when judging how long ago something was posted. We don't all run on Barbelith time.

There are a couple of moderator-friendly extras that I think might be quite useful.

1) Edit thread links on the forum index pages, so that small fixes can be made to topic titles and abstracts without having to enter the thread in question.

2) The ability to see if a thread or post is already in the moderation queue. At the moment, you can go through the entire process of editing whatever it is, only to be told that there's already an action pending on the thread/post. That screen needs to be the first one moderators see when they click the 'edit' link.

Or similarly an edit thread topic button at the top of each page as well so we don't have to waste that crucial 2.3 seconds scrolling down to the bottom of a long page full of pictures.

As an automatic function, could the board be programmed so all threads that are marked for deletion also get locked if the request is approved? I know of one case last year when some people were using a deleted thread for a discussion about trolling Barbelith which, thankfully, never seemed to come to anything, but if the moderators can't have their Supercontext I don't see why anyone else should be able to hide either. Perhaps in the short term if moderators want to delete a thread they should lock it first? (I think you can send the two different requests in two consecutive requests, I don't think you need to wait for the first request to be agreed to before sending the second one)

It might be handy if a thread has been locked that the 'add your reply' option is perhaps replaced with a 'thread locked' message, might be nicer than people clicking on the reply button and then getting the message that you can't reply because the thread is locked.

Here's something that should be really easy.

I'd really like it if the "you have n jobs to do" link for moderation tasks automatically spawned itself in a new window.

I'm always noticing those things when halfway through a thread or forum, and always sort of have to go elsewhere to do it then find my way back to where I was.

I've just noticed tonight (it may be new), that unless an HTML link starts with "http://", it will try and go to

http://www.barbelith.com/topic/www.yahoo.com

instead of say,

http://www.yahoo.com

Is this changable, or should we just make a note in the Wiki?

That's just the way writing links works in HTML.

Something that occurred to me today... finding "posts by poster" would be useful not just for stalkers, but for mods when alerted to "trollish" activity... if we could see previous posts by posters, it might help.

Also I remember finding it useful when I first joined... it's quite a large and bewildering board, and to be able to think "ah, this person has a lot of value to say about music... I wonder what they have to say about films" was quite cool.

I've been thinking about the fact that we can't now see the top three threads in each forum, and it occured to me that I have actually completely stopped looking in The Switchboard, and in Laboratory.

Pre-rainbow I sometimes looked there if there was a thread that looked interesting, post-rainbow I appear to have stopped looking completely. I know that heaps of people have already mentioned this, but I just thought it was worth noting. And whilst the intention was to encourage people to visit all the fora more, but, at least with me, it has had the exact opposite effect.

I think I should clarify that there was never an intention to make a statement with the removal of links through to threads from the front page, except that I had trouble reconciling the design with the functionality. This is not a good way to operate, but - as I'm sure you all remember - I was trying to get the site relaunched. I'm still fully planning on finding solutions to cross-forum navigation issues and to tracking changes across the board, but those issues have been slightly subsumed by my desire to find a way to open the board to members of the public again without fear of troll attack or having the site overwhelmed by newbies.

In it's favour I'd like to say that getting rid of the three topics seems to have made me check out the forums and start posting to them more, so diff'rent strokes...

I'd like an easier way of jumping between forums - possibly instead of using 1, 2, etc, in the path, you could use letters that are related to forum names or abbreviated versions of the names, so that it is easier to remember?

At the moment I try to remember which number corresponds to which forum, and then type it into my browser. Strangely, I work out the numbers by picturing the previous orange and white incarnation in my head, and then figuring out where forums are related to each other on that picture.

I second that emotion. I vote with the many who say please, when you get around to it, restore the 3 most recent threads feature. But I know you've got other things going on, Tom....we're a patient bunch and we appreciate all you're doing for the site.

I'm totally in favour of the "recent topics" thing, although I concur with Flowers to the extent that WHEN I'M AT WORK, (ie fast connection) I check fora I wouldn't usually for precisely the reason that I CAN'T see what's in them.

On my shitty wood-burning modem at home, it's more of a deterrent.
