Joss Stone

Has anyone else heard her R&B cover of "Fell in Love with a Girl/Boy"? I have to say that I found it pretty darn spiffy. Wouldn't have imagined a soul version of the White Stripes, but it works.

Her website has this to say:

As Joss was preparing to record what was supposed to be her debut album, she was introduced to some of the legends whose classic records she loved: The "Clean Up Woman," Miss Betty Wright, Timmy "Why Can't We Live Together" Thomas, Willie "Little Beaver" Hale, and Latimore, whose single
"Let's Straighten It Out" still ranks as a peak of sultry '70's soul.

I haven't heard the other covers on the album yet, but will definitely take a listen...

The cynical me thinks it is wonderful that we've finally found a blonde, white, pretty teenager to sing soul, because that widens the demographic so much more for this record and I can see it growing in a number of non-traditional territories. So much easier to sell, you see...

However, the music fan says he sort of likes the record, but it isn't anything special. Doesn't make me want to smash up the radio or anything, but I'm not rushing out to buy it either. And the rhyme scheme is messed up by the changing of "girl" to "boy," too...

Fools! Joss Stone is about as interesting as the White Stripes.

personally.. considering all the HYPE around joss stone at the moment, her actual stuff is a dissapointment. her producers, co-artists etc.. "testify" that she's the next aretha franklin.. (mind you most likely to a middle class white suburban audience who in actual fact have no more than skin deep knowledge of her and will purchase anything as long as theres enough of a fuss made abt it).

she does not hold a candle to aretha franklin. even anastasia and christina aguilera by raw talent and sound make joss stone pale in comparison. its all just one big hype about nothing interesting really. besides that the girl is unbearably annoying and ditzy to see and listen to in the interviews that sometimes appear on the telly, i think she is supposed to be passed of as "cute" and "endearing" but doesn't quite make it.

She doesn't sound like she either smokes or drinks. What the fuck?? She should be smoking and drinking and old. Fucking ameture... She's just really annoyingly bland.

That said, know what would have been interesting? Fell In Love With A Boy/Girl, in which Joss Stone falls for a pre-T MTF transsexual, but doesn't know how to handle the gender confusion or what it means for her sexuality. Am I the only one that would like to see these issues delt with in a soulpop song?

Gridley, what with yr defence of Jamiroquai and Joss Stone, I think it's fair to say that we do not meet musically.

Anyway....

Nasty, nasty, "worthy" crap. Shrink-wrapped coffee-table soul, complete with "authentic" cover art/type, just right for Jools Holland.

You know, I couldn't tell you if I liked Stone's music (although, TBH, I'd probably find it really, really fucking boring and MOR. Just right for people who hate the Neptunes, but love "real soul"), because I can't see past the disgusting packaging.

it's the way she says 'ing' words that gets to me. and you know, being patronised by children is just a bit annoying.

I've only heard her Stripes cover, and that made me want to riot... No originality or talent, she's the soul singing equivalent of Avril Lavigne.

f**k me how cynical do you need to be?! Lighten up!! It's music you like it you hate it! Who cares if she is young and blonde or old and fat and hairy and brunette! The voice is great the lyrics limited but hey each to their own!!!

Not another one. You lighten up, chancy (I like yr name, BTW - it's sort of annoying, but in a GOOD way) - it's FUN to slag off things you hate, just as it's fun to praise the things you love.

I'm so happy I don't live in a world where everyone agrees to live and let live. Nowt wrong with a bit of conflict now and then, is there?

Anyway, I've given my reasons....all of them perfectly valid, methinks.

Ah, the ever negative Fraely Boyce. I'm so glad you're judging my musical tastes based on bands that I barely know (I've only heard one song from each of them).

Tell me, Fraely of the perfect taste in everything, what music do you like?

Sorry, Grid, that was me, not Fraely (aaah, the fucking dangers of all this nasty suit swopping!).

I'm not sure why you've got it into yr head that Fraely's some kind of super cynical poster. And, anyway, it's not necessarily "cynical" to dislike something.

"what bands do you like....etc"

Oh, Please........
