Hi Fairy Princess. Having read Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency many moons ago I can attest to its aceness. But for those on here who haven't read it, why not elaborate on your initial post - why do you think it's ace? How do you think it compares to Douglas Adams's other work? What's in it that might appeal to Barbelith's reading community? Where there any bits you didn't like?

Interesting - I've never heard of this. When did it come out - after he died, or am I just waaaay behind the times?

Mid-80s? There's also the sequel: "The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul"... both quite good... although I can't for the life of me remember what the 1st one was about. The second involves sad, old Nordic Gods living in England...

The first one involves a time-travelling linguistics(?) professor called Donald Trefusis, a ghost entrepreneur called Gordon Way, a drippy protagonist called Richard, an electric monk, and all sorts of unlikely fun. The Ancient Mariner (Rime of) is in there somewhere too. It's been put on stage, twice, and it's great.

If you like Douglas Adams, you'll obviously love it, but if you like Douglas Adams, you'll almost certainly have read it like five times.

ooooooooh. I think I have read it then. It all sounds familiar - I'll have a look next time I'm in a book shop, and check.

Did everyone else notice the way Adams stole liberally from his own "City of Death" Dr. Who script for the first book? I remember being astounded at such brazeness when I was a youth.
