Has anyone else been watching this? Missed part one, but caught part two yesterday.
Fascinating stuff, this ep covered the waning of the 50s notion of black beauty being 'the best emulation of white beauty possible' (ie straightened hair, the Supremems, pale=good), through the black power/civil rights era and the 'black is beautiful' natural afro aesthetic/Ebony and Essence Magazines.
Also the gradual appearance of black models on the catwalk, and their eventual reakthrough into magazines, culminating in the first black model to feature on the cover of Vogue.
What made this, i think was the interview-heavy format, hearing views from those who were there, as activists, models, non-black fashion industry folk, as well as excellent use of music... |
