I have a friend who is a budding video game publisher and is fresh out of ideas. What is the most original video game idea? Any ideas used will be compensated **big time**.
Any ideas?

A game where you play a man living inside a person's head. You must subconsciously plant ideas in his head, and then your environment (the brain) changes as your vessel's circumstances change.

If you plant suggestions to kill someone, the mind will become a dark and tortured place, a relationship will transform the mind into a fluffy 'Yoshi's Story' kingdom and so on.

or...

How about a beat-em-up starring Eastenders characters. Rockin'

tell your friend to get in touch with john mccormack at big blue box dot com.

lion head and all that, ze should know them.
if he's amenable, that boy has ideas up the WAZOO for computer games, and he can only really work on one at a time.

of course, he may just tell you politely to remove your self from his field of vision, which is what i would do.

oh!
wait!
how about one with ninjas!
and zombie pirates that kidnap the princess so you need to rescue her using a BLSTERING combination of magic, stealth and animal cunning!

or maybe just do what everyone else does and rob antiquity for ideas?
(what is antuiquity in terms of computer games? the eighties?)

I've always thought a first-person drumming game would be wicked, played by tapping the buttons to the correct rhythm. You'd start off in a shitty garage band with a 5-piece kit and gradually get better and better equipment, playing to bigger crowds as you progress, they could add in drum fill "combos" and shit...you could make it span a number of musical genres...

...However, I'm probably the only person who'd ever want to play that.

some folks would be down.

if the controls were good and i had a midi drumkit, i would buy it.
problem is, it would be most fun for a begginner, and not many begginers own midi kits.

tolsik -

Thanks for the tip.

Another question for those in the know: Is there a videogame based on the Invisibles in the works? If not, how ard would it be to get the licence? Is it DC owned?

Keep the suggestions coming...and thanks.

I was thinking you could just use the buttons on a controller. The idea came to me whilst playing some long-forgotten button-mashing game, when I realized that I was actually "mashing" in a really quick rhythmical cycle a la Danny Carey.

Side note: Has anyone made a porno game yet?

I think EA has a Invisibles game in progress..

You are a modern zelda-ish boy, on the run from some terrible corporation called Meme Inc. planning to take over the world through a virus in the TV. You team up with others in a FF kinda-way. One hacker, one speed phreak, one magician etc..

...sounds more like Shadowrun than the Invisibles really.

Approaching this from the wrong angle entirely. You need to build up from how the player interacts with the game world, what experience you're trying to provide them with, not the clothes that experience will be draped in.

You will all have to work hard to depose this: The world's current greatest computer game.

Spatula Clarke

Well, that's the thing that separates video games from other forms of media, surely - the level of interaction the audience have. If you're considering other things first then you might as well be making a film, or writing a book. You need to figure out how you're going to make the interface invisible - how are you going to break down the wall between a player controlling an on-screen avatar with a control pad and actually being inside the game and controlling events directly? What are they going to be doing in that world - how much freedom are you giving them? Are you going to be leading them down a path from A to B or allowing them some amount of freedom? Do you want a traditional narrative at all? The setting and storyline should come after this is all sorted out.

Has nobody ever actually stopped to think why it is that EA games are generally shit? It's because they get this stuff the wrong way round.

A porno game, as far as I know, is not going to have a mainstream release for quite some time. Luckily, there are some underground games (mostly from Japan, natch) which cater to the 'erotic' climate.

There was an Emmanuelle game on the Amiga. There's also those Lula games that CDV spew up every now and again. Also stuff like this. Classy.

I remember reading Yawn was programming videogames @ one point - how many others have dipped into the field?

E. Randy Dupree - some great points. Any other words of advice from anyone?

Right now a commercial ARG would be excellent. (Alternate Reality Gaming). You`d need GM`s and actors to provide realistic off computer experience. Think majestic or in-memorium but where the plot is created in real time by script writers depending on player actions.
A bit of a headfuck when you stumble across an unusual website and think `is this part of the game...or is it real`

Maybe something that recreates the effects of a DMT trip? Frolicking with self-transforming machine elves and creating a visual language, synaesthesia style. Could be released to coincide with the upcoming pop culture psychedelic revival.
