Having just marvelled at Mr Dando's collaboration with Kirsty MacColl on 'Perfect Day' and with Craig Armstrong on 'Wake Up in New York', I was wondering if anyone could tell me if any of his solo stuff (or even work with the Lemonheads) is similarly... well, evocative ? I think he's got a great voice, but my previous exposure to it was solely on 'Big Gay Heart' (that was him, right?), and I think his vocals work well with a semi-minimal backing, if you see what I mean.

So if anyone can point me in the direction of more in the same vein, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

His recent solo album "Baby I'm Bored" is actually really, really good.. better than I think many people expected it to be. It might not fit your purposes so well however, cos it features really lush arrangements in a Giant Sand-ish 'trippy country' kind of vein. Some excellent songs though, and a really nice laidback atmosphere and terrific singing throughout - recommended.

There's a semi-official bootleg album from a couple of years ago of him doing a set of live songs, solo acoustic kind of thing, which is really good, but I can't remember what it's called..

"It's a Shame About Ray" is by far my favourite Lemonheads album, and it brings back lots of fun memories. It's a really sweet record that everyone should blast once or twice during the summer. It has some punky songs, and some quiet songs and some really poppy songs, and every single one is a killer.

Ahh, Shame About Ray really does evoke those long summer days. Love it to death. Can pretty much take or leave anything else by Dando or the Lemonheads though.

Slightly OT:

The thing I think of most when Evan Dando comes up is that Henry Rollins opened up for him at a festival show in South America. Rollins had actually near-broken his own nose during his set by (get this) hitting himself in the face with his own knee while rocking out, and then consequently passing out for a few seconds in a pool of his own blood. he played the rest of his set fine, but the kicker is that Evan Dando had to play a show in a pool of Henry Rollins' blood.

Thanks Rizla, I'll give BI'mB a try, sounds just the ticket.

LDones : Oh yes, I can believe that of the Rollster.

Where are these to be found?

For loveyly songs about falling in love with your cooker and pencil smelling schools, try "Lovey", its poignant funny and in my undervalued opinion, the best thing theyve done. And you can probably get it real cheap in your local Fopp.

Hunter: "Perfect Day" is only available on the Kirsty MacColl greatest hits compilation Galore, I think.

He's got a nice voice for duets, our Mr. Dando. He's got another on the tribute CD Beat the Retreat: The Songs of Richard Thompson, singing "For Shame of Doing Wrong" with lovely lovely Syd Straw.

Hunter : Jack F speaks aright about ‘Perfect Day’, and ‘Wake Up in New York’ is the second track on Armstrong’s second album, “As if to nothing”. Short, but glorious.
