Registering a domain

So I'm thinking of registering a domain. But after going to checkdomain.com, I've found that the domain name I want is already taken by CatchyDomains.com who are willing to sell it for $188. Seems a bit steep if I remember the price friends have paid for their domains.

•Is this highway robbery and if it is, how do I get it for cheaper (I've noticed the ownership expires at a certain date. Can I pounce on it on that day for cheaper?).

•Do I need to renew it yearly to maintain ownership?

•And what's a cheap place to have it hosted? And how much is it monthly for hosting?

All i know is that you need a major credit card for all of the ones i've seen and i'm pretty gutted about that. Why the hell can't they just take your bank details and take the money out in a direct debit?

Hey ho, it's the eternal struggle to register the domain name of your choice. And that's just the first step on the slippery slope...

- it is highway robbery and there's nothing you can do about it. You could hang around and try and pounce, but if it's a 'desirable' name, CatchyDomains will inevitably renew their ownership. It's so cheap for them, they can keep doing this forever...

- If you want a desirable name, expect to pay top dollar. Look for variations on the name, different top-level domains or different country domains (.com goes quickly, .biz and .org.be don't... for some strange reason).

- Remember, you can get .name domains now for a cheap price. Join the fun at www.ntk.net with the.man.with.no.name and where.the.streets.have.no.name

- You can buy a domain for up to 10 years (possibly more? not sure), thus avoiding the need to renew. It's also cheaper that way.

- Hosting rates vary depending on the package. There are absolutely loads of places that do cheap hosting, it's just a question of working out what hosting options you want and then comparing prices. Oneandone.co.uk claim to be number 1 - does this make them any good? Mods, where is Barbelith hosted?

- If you're looking for recommendations, I like www.gandi.net for registration and www.domainmonger.com for hosting, but that's because my taste runs to very very cheap and moderately cheerful.

- Credit cards are a must. Occupational hazard of the modern world, I'm afraid - they need the cards because credit card companies act as guarantors.

Any inaccuracies in the above are solely my responsibility because frankly, right now, I'm 100% wired.

Most of the UK ones take Switch. Or at least the ones I've looked at do.
