Boredom

Boredom strikes
In the most strange of ways,
Eating its way
Through the hours and the days.
Busy working on something
That dulls the mind,
Suppresses creative juices
And ideas fall behind.
Writing this poem
I did briefly shirk,
The monotomy of
My dreary work.
So back to the grindstone
I proceed,
It earns money I suppose
And thats what I need!

I am a Software Engineer. I work on a financial system that works out how much money someone gets when they sell you a pension. Now I'm not going to make out I've got the worst job in the world at all because I haven't. The moneys very good, the bosses are very reasonable and generous and I get on well with all my colleagues. We work in a well structured manner and my boss very much puts the emphasis on stuff being perfect when it goes to the customer over meeting a deadline on time. I get to surf the internet loads on the sly and now and again I find a moment to be creative. The problem is we only have one product and its not that interesting to look at all maintain. Currently I'm testing which means taking hundreds of screenshots to prove that the updates to the system are working correctly. Once I've done that I've got to cross reference 200 pages of screenshots with a test plan to make sure that my colleagues testing was carried out correctly. The problem is theres no application for my creative skills. If I'm lucky I might get to draw an icon soon! I've been doing this over 3 and a half years now. I'm leaving anyway in summer to do exciting and scary things (I'm off to live in Tanzania for a year). My girlfiend has bought me a leather bound journal to record our time there so its my oppurtunity to be creative and produce a travel log!

Anyway I really didn't put up the poem with the intention of blabbering on about my life and bragging about my new adventures so since this is the creative forum how about some other people coming up with some other silly (or maybe good!) poems and ditties about their jobs? See if we can get a collection together.

And yes I am a lucky bastard for having the oppurtunities to write at work!

Sorry to drag that out of you, CP. Sounds very familiar to my situation, too. Except the having the girlfriend part.

I like to make up little pieces in my head on the way to/from work: Here's something I'm gonna use in a comic I'm writing:

"Ever upon all times
dreamed of rescuing you
that you'd dream of being rescued
Lucid real eyes
will we realise?

I will come
down from the sun
One day
you will pray
and I
will fall from the sky"

I made a few poems from the odd day when people were made redundant but I somehow managed to lose them.

i sometimes come into work a little early and do my own thing to ease into the day... wrote a lyric yesterday, for a blues (sort of funk/reggae/western swing/blah..) band i jam with... s'fun way to pass thursday nights...

i like work early - it is on a large campus, i have real air and i can see trees and lake. anyway, i also like to think about 'her'... h'aaaaaaaaa........ ; )

secret loving

i
walk past strangers
walk with dangers
though our moon is not yet new

there is time
reason and rhyme
and yet still you give no clue

secret secret loving is all we have to do…

ii
there are moments
that elude me
and then days when all falls clear

and so nights alone,
so full of promise,
can you tell me what you fear?

secret secret loving is all we have to do…

iii
delusions are so
warm and sweet
like chocolate on a spoon

what do you taste?
who do you want?
do you have to leave so soon?

secret secret loving darlin’; that’s all we have to do..!

la la laaaa..... ka'boom!

Scoobyjah, I really, really like these lines:

Lucid real eyes
will we realise?

Awwww.. thanks, Olulabelle.

My problem with coming up with stuff like this is that I can't play any music. So I only get to keep the lyrics, not the tunes. I bought a second hand guitar ten years ago but I've only just decided to start using it.

Then a string broke.
