Maitreya or apocalypse?

I've been thinking about this for a while now : Christians have Revelation, where the end times, then Antichrist, big battle etc etc take place, but many Buddhists believe that the future Buddha, Maitreya, will be born on earth thousands and thousands of years from now when the earth is peaceful. Others think that Maitreya is already here, some even think that all of the prophets, saviors etc are all the same being. What i'm wondering is : which one do you believe or don't you believe any/have an opinion on this?

Also why do you think the Bible with it's Apocalypse etc, and the Buddhist idea of Maitreya incarnating in thousande of years when the earth is peaceful are so far apart?

I personally think that it's a test to see who loses hope and then loses the plot, and who stays optimistic and believes that something good will happen after a certain amount of shit has hit the fan.

Maybe Maitreya to guide in 2012? Maybe we all just do it ourselves?

I think apocalypse is a particularily selfish endgame. And pointless. Its all about revenge and self righteousness IMHO. 'We were right, you were wrong' and a few billion pointless deaths to be followed by judgement were most of the deaths get repeated. No peace on earth, just revenge on unbelievers. Eden reduced to a cum rag...

Yeah i definately agree with that, but as for what will happen, i don't know. I find it disturbing to think that Buddhist belief regarding the return of Maitreya will all be wrong if any group of nutcases decides to launch a set of nukes though.

Surely if Maitreya is in the higher planes waiting to be reincarnated he can see all this unfolding, so it's really puzzling to me, especially seeing as i'm a big fan of Buddhist philosophy.

All out nuclear war doesn't bring apocalyse, it just delays advancement and cause radical change, along with a few billion deaths and catastrophic levels of suffering. A blip in the history of time, a blink of buddha's eye...

Actually, if I can just cut in here for a second, all-out nuclear war ends human life forever. Most scientists agree that a nuclear World War III doesn't bring about Mad Max, it brings about some Andy Warhol movie were the camera is trained on a burned-out match-head in an endlessly repeating loop. So if that's the final battle, everybody's fucked. Um....as you were.

You might be taking the Maitreya thing a bit literally, dudes... We are the Maitreya here and now, every time that we catch up a little bit.

It was Bill Hicks, anyway
