Jack the bodiless,
I wouldn't dare get into a debate about real music vs pop music in relation to Marillion. I agree with you regarding Marillion's pop music side. I also love that side of their music. Hey, it's Marillion! Cover My Eyes, Dry Land, 80 Days, Waiting To Happen, Map Of The World, No-one can, Beautiful etc. were all brilliant tracks which should have been big hits but had no record company backing. It has always been important for a band wanting chart success to get their record company to put the big money behind them - guaranteed success even if a song is really bad - how else would some of the songs that hit number one get there! A lot of the number one hitters are never heard of again.

All Marillions poppier stuff should have been big hits, but it seems that EMI had just moved onto someone else as being flavour of the month, and that was it. However, Marillion are more than just their music, they're a band that are committed to their music, and they enjoy playing and writing that music. This then comes across in the music they write, which is what makes it so special.

The interview on the DVD single suggests that the band don't like doing the big pop circus thing, although their having a good stab at it with "You're gone". At least they're trying to do it themselves without the big company money behind them - can it be done? We await the charts today! Even if they don't get big chart success, the album Marbles is brilliant and I am recommending it to all and sundry.

I personally think the single version of "You're Gone" is too short and doesn't give any new listeners anything of Marillion to hang on to. The video also looks very cheap and rushed. Steve H even looks like he finishes miming too soon at the end, and looks around at the band with a "are we finished yet" look. Having a full two verses at the beginning of just Steve H's face (not even clear) is just plain boring and won't make anyone sit up and notice, which is what Marillion need to do if their going to attract new fans using this medium.

I personally think the next obvious single from Marbles should be "Don't Hurt Yourself", but they need to keep it full length, and do a decent video - lots of footage of the band live, interspersed with some kind of humorous story thread - these type of videos always seem to make people sit and watch the whole thing, and thereby get to know the whole song.

What part of "no.6" don't you understand? They've done it, baby! Top 10! The time to hesitate is through etc.

"Don't Hurt Yourself" would be a good choice, but it's another song which is pleasant but may not grab people immediately. Now "Genie" on the other hand...That is a song that has to be heard by everyone!

Ahem. It's just been pointed out to me that the CD:UK chart rating is not definitive, as it doesn't take account of Saturday's sales. So excuse me jumping the gun.

But they've done very well, regardless.

Haha. I think I scared my housemate a little bit when I saw the number 6 on Saturday with my gobsmacked expression and jumping up and down.

Wee update - the boys release a second single from Marbles, 'Don't Hurt Yourself', probably in two formats on the 12th July 2004.

...Which is the day after the London Astoria gigs, if that means anything to anyone

Anyone have any thoughts on the choice of single. I really like the song myself, but I must confess I'm a little frustrated that it's the more generic songs on the album that are getting released.

Why not release "Invisible Man"? Let's face it, all the Marillion fans are going to buy all of the singles, so people will have to like it or lump it. Although it probably wouldn't get much airplay.

"Genie" would be my dream Marbles single, but I'm not holding out too much hope. It's not even on the regular version, is it? (sigh...)

Well, they don't have to really do anything by the book now do they? As long as they conform to chart guidelines they could release songs that are on the double album. They could release anything off the album, er except Ocean Cloud I think, which is a few minutes too long?

But yes, Genie is pure class, impossible not to sing along with!

Weeeell... the single is traditionally purely an advert for the album. As in, the album available in the shops. Genie isn't on the retail version, and releasing a single which is an advert for an internet-only double album costing just shy of thirty quid is a waste of money and time. Equally, releasing Invisible Man (which won't get any airplay, no matter how good it is or how well it charts, because it's too damn long and has too many movements to edit), will also not advertise the album well and will also be a waste of time and money. There's no sense in releasing a single that no one will hear or that won't do the job, just because they can.

So what on the retail version's a good choice for a single? The alt.country-pop sing-a-long that is Don't Hurt Yourself? Yes, probably. Angelina? Brave choice, but a good one, especially with the blues intro edited out. Fantstic Place? I'd hate the edit. Any edit. It would make me want to kill things...

I don't agree on this Jack, we are in uncharted (geddit?) waters with this album and the way it is being marketed. Marillion can try all sorts of unusual stuff now they have created more awareness of thier existence. This next single and then another (which will no doubt hit just around the top 10 mark) will create further awareness and attract the casual/lapsed buyer. Don't forget that one sale of the deluxe album is worth about 300 times the money they would have got from old traditional sales of an album through EMI. The sort of people they are trying to attract are intelligent enough to seek out the website and order the deluxe or double version. There is no shop presence to speak of, because it was not chart eligible. Therefore, Genie could be a special fourth single (After FP full version - no compromises)which is more along the lines of an EP. There are no record company rules any more - exciting isnt it!

Mayyyybe, v1sion. I'm a little ambivalent, mostly because they have released a retail version of the album, which is what 90% of non-fan reviewers have been reviewing. If they're planning to ignore the retail version in favour of the deluxe version, then why release it and market it in the first place?

And a lot of people can't afford nearly thirty quid for an album based on liking a single or two. Moreover, I don't think Don't Hurt Yourself will have anything like the impact on the charts that You're Gone did - there are only two formats, for one thing (so instantly a third of the potential sales figures, based upon You're Gone's success are lost), and the First Single Imperative is gone, so I don't think the entire hardcore massive will turn out like they did in May. In addition, it'll be the height of summer, traditionally an excellent time for singles sales - so every other artist releasing singles that week is likely to have a boost. True, Marillion may also profit from that boost, but it's more likely to be youth-friendly prduct that benefits - the kind of hip pop music that's really popular, as opposed to the kind of pop music that Marillion make... Could happen, though. I remember Counting Crows' having phenomenal success with their cover of Big Yellow Taxi a couple of years ago. Even counting the cover audience (Amy Grant's version being more well known than Joni Mitchell's original), that's still the kind of precedent we're looking at. Crossed fingers...

True, true, essentially, this single won't get as high unless it gets on the radio 2 playlist, a sad fact. But we can have a great time trying to get it as high as possible first week. I trust you will be pre-ordering?

I think part of the issue is whether you're aiming more for airplay or for chart position. "You're Gone" being played on the radio probably didn't make that much impact in itself, as it sounds fairly generic until you get the feel of where the band is coming from. "Don't Hurt Yourself" is a similar case I think. But all the same, getting a high chart position two or three times is going to make people take notice, regardless of what the song is. And since the majority buying the singles will buy them regardless of what the song is, why not put out something which shows Marillion's more unique qualities. That way if anyone does check out the song when they see it listed on TOTP or whatever, they will be getting a taste of the real, hardcore Marillion.

But the outcome of this one is by no means certain, is it? Maybe the fans will buy both formats twice. Maybe I will. Fuck it. They're the only band I've been bothered about supporting in this way as long as I can remember, so might as well just go nuts.

[I'm not meaning to dismiss the two songs that have been chosen, I love them both. But they're not going to make a big impact in themselves, I don't think. It's about getting the name out there again, IMO.]

Thats the spirit sir! I have always bought several copies of each Marillion single, since probably the Holidays in Eden period. Some of the more unusual formats are a bugger to find, so I always make a point of just getting a load of them first week. They also make nice pressies for friends, potential fans etc. If it helps my fave band of twenty years get just a bit higher in the chart, a bit more exposure, then I will produce the credit card! Certainly will be doing this again for the new single. I'm really looking forward to what Steven Wilson has done with Angelina and the live tracks on CD 2!
