New Scientist is reporting that a new microbial fuel cell that runs on human waste has been developed at Pennsylvania State University.

Of course, it's in the early stages of development but a prototype has demonstrated the successful transformation of raw sewage into energy.

It seems like every few months or so, we see some new and promising technology being developed, but the ones that get to market tend to be more in the toy category than the social boon category. What socially beneficial technologies that were announced over the past few years have actually started making their way into the global marketplace?

Once someone finds a way to make money out of our shit, it will all fall into place. Nitrogen powered automobiles have just begun to attract investment with the propspect of eternal wars for oil as an alternative, so who knows?

I've known of people to keep shit in vast containers to convert it into methane for welding. Turning shit into Gold it's like sommat out of a Feral House book! Wasn't it Gilbert & George who did the "shit" art exhibit? Alt tech will only be taken seriously when the fossil fuels have completely dwindled, since the major corps have it all tied up in a bag.
