You could go two ways with the definition of non-Hollywood... one is American independents, the other is any film-maker outside the US system. Both of these are filled with amazing talent, but they come in all flavours. You pays your money, you makes your choice...

Being a Brit, I'll post some local talent here... so I'll go for Shane Meadows, who has the talent but more importantly has the heart. I didn't like his last film (Once Upon A Time in the Midlands) too much, but A Room for Romeo Brass and 24/7 are both little masterpieces.

On topic, well, where to start? No matter how many times I see it I'm still blown away by Carol Reed's use of light in The Third Man. Actually I just love the whole film.
