Amanita Muscaria

Has anyone ever used Amanita Muscaria mushrooms, and can you share anything about the experience? What research I've done is turning up lots of historical info, but not a lot of reports from modern users. I've heard the experience compared to a belladonna trip, and my understanding is that belladonna is really scary stuff (Leary himself is quoted as saying he's never known anyone who had a good trip on belladonna). Also, how toxic is it? I've gotten conflicting reports on this, mixed in with warnings about potential mixups with VERY toxic specie like Destructive Angel and Death Cap.

Not looking for recreational value, but potential for spirit journeying/shamanic uses (hence posting on the Magick board).

Can anyone help? I haven't really found anything in the archives on this, either - if anyone knows of existing threads on the topic I'd love to see them as well. Thanks!

Hmm, yeah... I had looked at some of the Erowid info already (it's definitely the first place to look for this sort of thing), but I wasn't finding much in the way of firsthand accounts. Maybe I'm missing it? There's a lot of sections there and I haven't read them all. Thanks for the link!

Has anyone here had any firsthand experience with Fly Agaric? Or even secondhand? If all you have is a "my friend took some and flipped out" story, even that'd be helpful. Thanks!

I've done it, the trick to getting the really far out head trips is in finding your specific dose level to trigger it. Unfortunatly everyones is different, and it doesn't seem to follow a dose to weight ratio. It will take you quite a few tries, but once you've found YOUR specific dose write it down, for Eris sake write it down.

Anecdotal type story:

A relative of mine and her friend ate some in the 70's but didn't get any effect at all. She wrote it off as a banana peel type psychedelic experience, but also says that she probably took a too small dose. She doesn't remember any more how much, though.

There was a documentary on this on ( UK ) Channel 4 a few years ago, where two or three volunteers took a fairly big dose in the English countryside, then explained how they felt as the stuff kicked in. They seemed fairly out of it, but I don't recall anyone reporting anything particularly spectacular, in terms of insights etc. So based on that, it maybe seems a bit B grade - perhaps it's one of those things that needs to be used in a specifically ritualised/cultural context, so it might be worth checking out Lap/Russian shamanism, if there's a site about that.

I've done Fly Agaric a few times - both times I peeled the skin off em and dried them and smoked them in a pipe. I don't know what I got out of them I was already pissed and stoned but I did feel well spaced out. I've heard that if you simmer them in milk for quite a while the brew can have good effects. Grows mostly near Birch trees and it pops up alot in graveyards fer some quirky reason. The deoxy website or some shaman website would have good info I reckon.

my In-laws ate some once, got really sick, and thought they were dying (stomach cramps nasuea that sort of thing). Mildly hallucinogenic effects, but they said it was not worth the ambulance ride. Most of the aminitas I think have two or more types of toxins, one neurotoxic which produces the visuals. another is toxic to the general body (especially gastric systems) which causes a lot of people who eat them to feel like they are dying, and the one in some amanitas that kills you is the liver killing one which can take a few days in which you feel fine to completely wreck your liver beyond repair. It seems a little risky for a trip that is not even that great. What are you intending to get out of the shamanic trip thing that you cannot get with regular mushrooms?

On a side note my roommate (who is a botany major) wants me to warn you that in addition to the fact that you should not eat mushrooms classified as poisonous, you should also not eat wild carrots even though they look and taste good because wild hemlock looks exactly the same (humor her, she's crazy and has been worrying about people eating poison hemlock for months now.)

I've used Flyagaric a few times, once as a single substance and several others in potions. It has never made me ill. Each time I have used it has been in some kind of magical context, mostly ritualised. The time I took it as a single substance was in some woods on a magical walk with another magician and we were talking about the horned god - like you do. We picked a mushroom and performed an honorary rite and then ate a piece of it. It was lovely, all the woodland became especially vibrant and the spirit of the place was massively apparent. The colours, smells and sounds of woods were greatly enhanced and I was aware of becoming much more part of the place too, i.e. 'my' spirit seemed to move with much greater ease amongst everything else that inhabited the place. I was still consciously human, but defintely more merged with surroundings. My awareness of anything other than the woods disintegrated too and I can remember coming round from one spell of trance and noticing some kids quite nearby playing but I had not being able to hear them or be aware of them in other ways at all. In many ways I experienced it as quite a soft trip because it didn't contain any far out visual hallucinations or crazy meandering thoughts I've come to expect from other psycoactive substances, but the effects were much more subtle and much more enchanting really.

The other occasions I've had it in potions (not made by me, so no recipes, sorry) have also being in the woods as a sacrament in ritual. These experiences have contained recognisable elements of the above one with regards to the woodland spirits (god that sounds twee - but it's not believe me!) but have also had a significant element of deity or whatever else was being conjured, as well as the other ingredients of the potion of course.

I can't for myself ever wish to partake of flyagaric indoors now, just doens't seem to fit. Try it in the woods, probably best in the ones you pick it in and fly, fly, fly....

On dosing, just take a small amount, you can always take more to enhance the effect if you want, be calm, be centred and do honour the shroom and the spirit of the place first. Other common sense things not to forget are about not eating mouldy or maggoty ones! And as a last thought I was just considering that there's always risk involved in taking toxic substances, so maybe you have to be prepared to get ill or even die in which case you might want to have someone there with you!

hey man.i'd just go with psilocybin cubensis.from what i've read and stories i've been told, amanita's not as pleasurable, nor as visionary.seems to be considered as a bit second rate and chancy as far as shrooms go,but twas good enough for siberia,so....

Hmmm...

Considering that fly agaric is really difficult to get hold of in my part of the world anyway - it doesn't just grow in the woods around here - it sounds like I probably shouldn't bother... Particularly since regular psilocybin 'shrooms are fairly abundant here and I have plenty of experience with them already. (Only reason I asked about fly agaric was a rumor that someone here some available).

Thanks much to all for the insights! (I love that about Barbelith, you can ask just about anything and SOMEONE will have something interesting to say about it...)

I just did this the other day and it got me totally blissed out. Didn't exprience any nausea or sweating or anything like that. I took it in nature. No visuals, but intense intoxification and euphoria. Near the end before I fell asleep (I went back home and went to bed) I remember my mind going 500mph and having some unusual thought processes going on but that's it as far as mental effects. I think I took 5 - 10 grams, didn't have a scale so I couldn't measure it.

You can get it at a reasonable price online, but I still didn't try it for a long time because I was afraid it would be a waste of money since there are so many bad trip reports around. But it was definately worth it, for me anyway. I'm probably going to try a higher dose when I get a scale and I feel I'm ready.

Clause Heinrich has published a book Mushrooms and religion and tells stories on having eaten dried ones for years. He suggests images diagrams symbolism and alegories of ancient alchemy texts reveal the sacred through there use and how Amanita Muscaria was the back bone of all religions.
