Help, My Sound Is Gone

it's been 5 days since my Windows 98 PC lost its sound. it's like losing part of its soul. the last thing I remember doing that involved using it was watching some movie trailers. one of them took so much to start loading that I ignored it and clicked on another one. than the previous started running and paused the second. one was in Quicktime, the other in WMP.

the day after that the sound was gobe - for EVERY soft that uses sound. I checked the system volume control and everything looks just like it did earlier. cables are ok too. tried to jack an earphone in to see if the PC cables were the ones with problems but nothing happened. the Yahama soundcard was ok, but since I was suspecting it had something to do with it I uninstalled and installed it back using the system CD.

and still nothing. any clues? thanks in advance for those who answer.

It sounds like Windows has fucked itself (try to look surprised). Usually if there is something majorly wrong, you can try to fix it as much as you like, only to find that a complete windows reinstall is the only possible solution.

Before doing that though, I would take the soundcard out and test it in another machine to see if its a hardware problem.

man, my sound is back! God bless my good friend Dr. Okubo who guided from his house like a Dr. Fritz spirit to fix this. I went to SYSTEM > SOUND CONTROLLERS and uninstalled all the sound parts that were using Crystal. I'm using Yamaha here but after I rebooted the PC the sound was back, for every software. thanks for thosee who helped. my PC has a soul again.

You know, the same thing happens to me every so often and the way I fix it is to have somebody who knows about computers come over and try to play something. Inevitably it works for them and I begin to swear up & down that I did exactly what they're doing and it wouldn't work.

The sound is currently out, I will try the technique you mentioned.
