I'm velvetvandal, and I don't know how my computer works

This'll be a real easy one for you lot.

My computer won't show me pictures, all of a sudden. Sometimes it will, but sometimes it won't. The queer thing is that these are pictures on sites I have previously been able to access (and no, I'm not talking about porn here - I can get at the porn just fine), but suddenly instead of being able to see the pictures I just get the little red x in a box graphic. Which is, to put it mildly, maddening.

Why is the infernal contraption doing this, and how can it all be put right?

you're gonna need a hammer and some gasoline to fix this one

Sounds like either a virus or you've been deleting things from your registry? That's how i got that problem anyway.

I think your gonna have to reinstall.

Which operating system and browser do you run? If it is only happening with internet sites you have visited previously I would clear out cached type things (usually tools>internet options) and try again.

It sounds like the sites where the pictures are are just inaccessable.

Try with a proper browser.

...does it work if you right click on the x and select show picture? If it does, it may just mean your connection is poo.

Hmmm - clicking 'show picture' doesn't work.

Tried deleting my temporary internet files and trying again - that didn't work...

Computer is free of all viruses (it says),

so that leaves two options, I guess:

1) Re-install, as suggested by JF

2) Try a new browser

If I try a new browser, how is that gonna affect my internet situation? I use a dial-up connection (yes, I live in the stone age, laugh at me) and my ISP is Freeserve - what kind of an effect will getting a new browser have?

The kind of effect that means you might be able to see your pictures!

My computer did this today, but I'd been mucking about with the 'Advanced' Internet options yesterday. Still can't touch the big boys, it seems. Anyway, I reset and it's fine now, but now mpegs only open embedded in webpages, which is fine for YouTube or whatever, but I do prefer my Media Player. The settings for that don't seem to have changed.

Any help?

A new browser won't affect your connection at all, velvetvandal - it's just a different bit of software to view things on/through. You can even have both running at once - I use IE for somethings and Mozilla for others, and have them open at the same time without any probs.
