Today, I glanced out the coffeeshop window onto the seats outside, and noticed a fella flipping through a heavily annotated booklet with Hebrew letters and the word 'sephiroth', and taking notes and drawing diagrams. He was very obviously working something out, not just writing down information.

I was somewhat tempted to say hi, but I decided I would probably be somewhat nervous if I were doing work like that and someone struck up a conversation. What would you/have you done in that situation?

Yeah i'd of left him too at the risk of putting him off whatever he was doing, it would of been cool to know what he was up to though, that does sound interesting.

I think I would have probably would have let him get on with it. Someone in the middle of something might not like being interrupted. I do like meeting other occultists though. I think you can learn more in a five minute conversation than you can in months of reading.

I tend to prefer going over to 'em, hitching up my belt, spitting out a wad of chewing tobacco and going 'Well, well, well...this town ain't big enough for the both of us, pilgrim. You ain't from round here, are ya, boy?' etc etc

Seriously, though, I know that if someone interrupted me I'd probably think it somewhat rude. However, if someone waited 'til I was finished and then said 'Hey, I noticed what you were up to there,' and started an occult-related conversation I'd probably be all 'Hey! Neat! Another one! We're like Rosicrucians or something! Let's go get a coffee and plot to bring down the monarchy and institute a republic of love and compassion! Yeah!'

The truth is probably somewhere in between these two poles.

I would have probably wanted to meet them and so waited until they were putting their stuff away. Then again I don't know if I would actually say anything at all but I would wish I had.

I always feel odd going up to other magicians, becuase I never know if we're working within a similar frame of reference. I've met some people that read some pretty neat books but turn out to be fluffy pagans, or others that just look at me like I'm nuts because the way I look at magic is on a different wavelength than the way they look at it.

Still, I've met some of my best friends by engaging them in conversations over the books they were reading, so you never know. I suppose the worst thing that can happen if you were to ask the guy mentioned in the above posts when he was putting his book away, would be "Sorry, I don't want to talk right now" or "Fuck off". Ok...maybe not the worst thing (considering some of the shit that can happen), but probably close to the worst thing.
