...if you must...

It does seem a bit odd that you appear so resistant to adding your thoughts to a thread whose subject matter obviously interests you (the headshop death penalty thread) in preference to clogging up another one.

But returning to the land of on-topicia does anyone think this axis serves any useful purpose? People already have a fairly good idea about their own politics don't they?

This always struck me as an online quiz - a slightly more involved version of "which hobbit slash pairing are you?", with the same potential to provoke thought in the right mind.

Three-dimensional. Not four-dimensional. Dammit.

I think the major value of Political Compass, crude though it might be, is to at least start people thinking that actually, political opinion isn't just on a straight line from Left to Right, or Liberal to Conservative. Sounds like quite a simple idea but the one-dimensional concept is so prevelant in what passes for grown-up political discourse that it does need to be said. I've seen the piece about the "extreme Right" often not actually being that economically right-wing frequently baffle people who really should know better.

I don't think so. Lots of people do, of course, but I think that lots don't. I think there is often a mismatch between a person's self image and expedient affiliations and their actual opinions. I can think of a few friends, for instance, whose left wing sentiments rapidly decline with their salary or distance from their favourite issue.

In re: clogging up the thread, etc., I replied only because Nobody's Girl seemed genuinely interested in my elaboration, and this was the thread on which she asked for elaboration. I didn't especially want my comments moved over to the death penalty thread because I don't feel my thoughts on the subject are especially original, and I don't see how they'd contribute anything to the ongoing dialogue there. I can, however, see how they'd inspire some people to debate me on the subject, which I'm not interested in. End threadrot, again.

My old scores from the old thread:

Economic Left/Right: -5.62
Authoritarian/Libertarian: -6.56

All new score:

Economic Left/Right: -7.00
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.62

I was sure I'd moved toward the centre, but am relieved to discover otherwise.

At least I made it to the "good" quadrant.

Sheesh.

I supported the death penalty too, kinda. I was hoping my answers concerning rehabilitation and social responsibility of corporations might cancel it out a little. I'm going back in to read what ya'll wrote.

Oh, okay.

I got

Economic Left/Right: -8.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -8.82

I think that was about the same as last time.

I honestly feel that the questions on this quiz are far too specific to be effective at judging a person's politics. For instance, according to the quiz, I've become more authoritarian and leftist since the last time I've taken it a few months ago. I honestly feel that that is blantently wrong, in that I know for sure that I've grown more libertarian and conservative - the exact opposite of what it tells me.

If someone could construct a more accurate quiz than this, then I'd love to see, as fridgemagnet suggested, a 3D quiz option that would chart someone's change over time.

Weirded out a little. I expected to be way right libertarian, with all the pot smoking gun nuts.

I think associating with Barbelith is influencing my politics. You should be proud.

Here's a similar thing, but with extra interpretations and ginchy pictures.

According to the quiz above, I am a socialist, falling somewhere in between Hillary Clinton and Gorbachev in the "Famous People" sector.

Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: -8.75

i didn't like how some of the questions were phrased, though. i identify as a red-leaning social anarchist, and my politics are close to anarchocommunism without being nearly as dogmatic as most anarcho-commies i've met. eg i don't really want a political system with parties, i want small scale community based direct democracy, so the one party v two party question doesn't apply to how i really feel about it. or "government should penalize businesses that mislead the public" doesn't fly as much when you don't buy into government or business as something seperate from "the public".
