I've read a bit about Fantomas, and there's one thing that has me baffled.
How do you pronounce "Fantomas"? Is it "Fan-toe-mah"? "Fan-toe-mahs"? (c) Other?
Love the character ... wish I could find more copies of English translations. I was only ever able to find a copy of the first book. All that stuff about the daughter of Fantomas sounds like it'd be fun to read.
In case anyone who knows Spanish wants to read it.
Never had any interest in him apart from that pulp-ish curiosity I have about the beginning of the century pulp mags characters. Still, I understand he's something of an icon in French culture.
Well, when I saw one of the Fantomas movies back in Moscow when I was around 5 or 6 it was pronounced "Fanta" (like the soft drink) "mass" (pronounced like "lass"). Ofcourse the movie was dubbed in Russian and I can barely remember any of it but never the less it might be correct.
Actually I think that it's pronounced just like Sax said.
It must be Fahn-Toe-Mah. The "o" has a little hat (circumflex), and French "s"'s tend to be silent. I haven't seen any of the Fantomas films, but I hope they're more interesting than the Les Vampires series, which I just couldn't get into.
I think I'm going to go with "Fanto-mah" for now, at least if I'm discussing the French guy (and not any spin-off movies or comics from other countries). Thanks for your advice!
