Barbelith Database Server change...

Tom Coates

Ladies and Gentlemen, I have just managed to change the database server for Barbelith. This means two things:

THINGS MAY HAVE BEEN LOST
a) Messages posted in the last hour or so MAY HAVE BEEN LOST.
b) Users who joined in the last hour or so MAY HAVE BEEN LOST.
c) Private messages sent in the last hour or so MAY HAVE BEEN LOST.

THE BOARD SHOULD BE MUCH MUCH FASTER
a) Looking at things should be faster
b) Posting things should be faster
c) All manner of things should be faster

Yeah. Just posted a link to the new Punisher trailer and the post went up lightning fast, whereas before it was a few seconds of wait.

Thanks Tom.

Oh which reminds me. If anyone posted anything in the blackhole which they REALLY want to preserve, then let me know and I'll see if I can dig out the text so they can repost it from the blackhole bin.

Oh, it’s too fast now! Can you slow it down a bit?

Only joking.

Tom, you so rock. I think everyone here really, really appreciates all the time and effort you put in to making this place so great. Thanks.

Barbelith is now a much, much smoother ride. Thankyou Tom!

ohmygod.
What will we do with all the time this frees up? We might have to go... into the real world.

While I'm hear - can anyone think of any LITTLE things that need to be done around the place that I might actually be able to do? Bear in mind that my skills at the moment are probably going to be limited to moving a few things around and tarting up some of the colour schemes. Oh and I've opened up the board to everyone again. We'll see how it goes, OK? No promises.

Oh also - don't necessarily bet the farm on it staying this fast in the long term. This may have to be something I do every six months or so.

Little things?

New colour scheme'd be good. This was always supposed to be temporary, yeah?

Oh, I like the colour scheme just the way it is. But then, I’d probably like the change, too. Whatever happened to the User Juries that were being mooted a while back?

Yeah it was, wasn't it. God I'd forgotten that. Hm. I'll have to think about that.

Here are some other things I've been considering:

1) Making the Underground sit at http://www.barbelith.com and moving the zine inside the site somewhere.
2) Making the site 800 in screenwidth rather than 640. Not necessarily a great idea, but there might be something good we can do there.
3) Make the Conversation and the Policy only accessible (and/or visible) to registered and logged in users, so we concentrate newcomers on the subject oriented parts of the board before they choose to join.

I can't begin to express how good of a thing it is that you've reopened the board to everyone, Tom. I've pseudo-recommended Barbelith to a number of people in the last little while, but basically told them not to bother unless they wanted to go through a lot of hassle. Thank you for removing the hassle.

Truth be told, I dont know what Lith looks like on an 800 width screen. Is it really tiny? Im on a laptop (800x600 max), and 800 width is certainly pretty voomph. Scrolly scrolly scroolll..

Barbelith.com. Yep. Cunning plan, I think. I've got it (/underground)in my favourites list, so I usually bipass the main site anyway.

I'd say it would be better that the forums were at barbelith.com, considering they're the only thing that's really changing around here.

thanks tom, i'd noticed that things were getting pretty slow 'round here but i didn't want to complain. i'd say go w/#3, letting unregistered people see things other than conversation.

Whooo, it's fast. Let's get all the animals with floppy ears to lean over the edge!

Barbelith open to the masses, what wonderful news . I can now link people through to cool threads in my blog.
Thanks Tom you're a *star*

Oh yeah and heres a vote for #3 as well, actually had to do it with a board I run, where I shifted our playground section right down the menu selection so it wasn't the first thing people saw when they logged on. Seemed to work out.

Wicked, Tom! I like this usable 'lith!

Seriously, I kind of like the idea of making the Conversation only accessible to registered members... not so sure about the Policy (it's like a much more dynamic FAQ for new members or those who want to join, imho). Although, if we made the wiki easier to find, that wouldn't be an issue!

The link to the Bomb pages is a bit screwy, Tom - rather than taking you to the front page, it instead leads to the directory of site elements.

Nice to see the bomb again as well as the "tweeked" 'lith.

Hurrah! I'm just glad that we can get newbies to see the board without having to join. I think this will help getting people to join the board having seen there's stuff to do. Can you still post in the Policy without being registered? I remember that's how things were back in the day. If we still can then perhaps you should keep that visible so that if they have questions they can pose them there.

Otherwise, thanks Tom. Now I know why a couple of my posts never showed up on Saturday night. I thought it was another conspiracy!

Yeah nice one Tom, it's a lot better now. Also thanks from me too for opening this place up for everyone, i wouldn't have ever got here otherwise.

I still partly remember the shock (good shock) i had when i checked here for some reason and found i was free to join, that was cool!

The board certainly is piss-quick. Well done, Tom.

I'd quite like a colour change, actually. Gotta keep current, and all that. What about something 50s influenced, which is all the rage this Spring?

Do we know the links on the webzine page don't work any more, by the way?
