In honor of Britney Spears' new kabbalah kick, what famous people of the current/past age do you know of that were/are magicians? This could be a fun list. Maybe back up ambiguous cases with a bit of proof.

I'll start off with:
John Lennon and Yoko Ono ("Magic is real. We think magic is made in your mind." –Playboy interview 1980)
David Bowie (see utterly fascinating Peter Koenig article The Laughing Gnostic)
Bjork (chaos star tattoo, general artistic approach)
W. B. Yeats (duh)
John Gardner, author of "Grendel" (see college journal The Sunlight Dialogues)
Madonna (actually quite astute at kaballah it seems; modern day avatar of BABALON)

flann o'brien - to me the third policeman reads like a satire of the golden dawn's history, and the massive influence (through yeats) its symbolism had on irish letters.

in the english-speaking comics world, just to recap, there's alan moore, grant morrison and pat mills.

there's the blondie guy's new book that i've not read, which i imagine might convince you that jagger and roeg were 'practising' for a bit at least.

ted hughes - anglo shamanism ahoy

iain sinclair - urban shamanism ahoy

stewart home - skinhead chaote

(those last two are hardly famous i know. though hardly a week goes by without sinclair popping up on the bbc)

also yr latterday gnostic saints, who would've looked funny at you if you'd told them they were a magician, but post-mortem there's not much they can do about it: hplovecraft and pkdick

allejandro jodorowsky - you could miss it from his comics perhaps, but not his films

henri michaux - tried writing his own voynich manuscripts under mescalin

most the surrealists to greater or lesser degrees

led zeppelin, whoever the fuck they are

obviously there's a point where Magicqk-ians become difficult to spot, and what you have is an artist whose themes overlap with the esoteric.

or
charles II - poshest alchemical lab in the world

black brothers:
walt disney and george lucas

That Bowie article is amazing - haven't read the whole thing yet but I'm already blown away. Thanks for the link & the cool topic!

On the strength of Adaptation I'd say Charlie Kaufman. The movie hints strongly at a perception of existence from outside linear time, the interconnectedness of all things, and the potential for change through narrative manipulation.

Saul Williams can be (but isn't always) a master of the power of the spoken word. He's also extremely well versed on applied mythology/comparative religion and appears on his album cover in front of an altar. Check Coded Language, Ohm or Twice the First Time, or watch the movie Slam.

Cary grant delved into the world of lsd.....Making him at least initiated in the workings of the unconscious mind, Jonathan dimbleby is apparently involved in masonry , Mae West practiced techniques for developing esp, the lead singer for Muse (I forget his name) is really into magic mushrooms and ouija boards, Tony Robinson of time team is a worshipper of the yog-sothoth....

One of these is false, which one is it?

Kurt Cobain : look at the back of Nirvana's In Utero and you'll see the symbols on the back. Alchemical etc.

Robert Fripp, not that I have any proof of that, mind you.

While fliming The Serpent and the Rainbow, Wes Craven was one of the few people in the shooting staff to take Voodoo seriously (he believed the priests had put a curse on him), and he was one of the few people who never got sick. (See This transcript of Joe Bob Brigg's comments on the movie) That doesn't make him an out and out magician, but at least he takes it seriously.

Coming at it from the other end, Late night talk radio, pioneered by Art Bell has provided a forum and a kind of fame for remote viewers and some magicians here in the States. Just talk to any overnight trucker about Major Ed Danes or Father Martin's exorcisms...

I saw a Photo of Lenny Kravitz recently wearing a jacket which had a huge Chaospheare with 'CREATE REALITY' scrawled across it on the back. Of course he could just be shopping at a trendy LA Fashion/Magick boutique.

is anyone here watching 'Til Death Do Us Part: Carmen and Dave on MTV? Dave Navarro (guitarist for Jane's Addiction) has a suspiciously Thelemite-looking tattoo on his right elbow.

Perry Farrel is supposed to be a pretty hardcore Hebrew scholar (according to Bono, in an interview I read), and he's also pretty into yoga...

And Maynard Keenan from Tool, by his own admission. There's a lot of symbolism in just about everything they do, especially on the Laterulus album.

George Orwell once cursed a classmate at Eaton, who died a week later, leading to a lifelong guilt trip for Orwell. His work's strictly socialist realism tho'.

L. Ron Hubbard

Can anyone elaborate on Ted Hughes? I tried looking for occultish stuff on him once and did not turn up much.
