Stephen R. Donaldson's "Gap Cycle"

Anyone else here read this series? I read about 2 or so years ago. I quite like it, prefer it to the Thomas Covenant books (that probably makes me a minority). It's very long but a good read, I think. One thing I like about Donaldson is that his characters are usually flawed. In the Gap Cycle there aren't many "good guys" at all. And I thought his Amnion aliens were well-created.

I loved the Gap cycle. Well, loved AND hated. They're nasty, nasty books- not only are there few sympathetic characters, there are few characters who aren't out-and-out cunts.

That is their genius, though. "The Real Story" (what a fucking title) sets you up to expect a totally morally simplistic world... then, as the series progresses, every one of your expectations is shat on. Although they're immensely readable (unlike the Covenant ones, which, while great, are a fucking effort) they're quite an ordeal. A worthwhile one.

And, totally beside the point, they're damn well written, and Donaldson knows how to do space opera (well, space Wagner) and give it the epic scale it needs.

On the whole, I think yes, they're probably better than the Covenant books. And you're right- the Amnion are a totally fucking genius creation.
