Sage Francis

I recently got the album 'Personal Journals' by Sage Francis after hearing a million good things about the guy from magazines and friends. I E-mailed a friend of mine to tell him to check SF out, calling him 'the good Eminem', and he mailed back:

"downloaded 'different' of that album. now unless the rest is significantly better i have to say that this guy is pretty shit. why?
i) delivery. he can't get the words out with any kinda flow (by which i mean continuity and rhythm), and he sounds like a poncy white twat.
ii) what he says may be vaguely amusing or even slightly intelligent, but he's egotistical - his seems to think that i should give a fuck what he says for some reason. i don't.
iii) the eminem comparison - well this guy probably wouldn't be 'rapping' if it weren't for eminem. eminem is way better than this, and he's fairly shite now so that isn't saying much (though his first album was great). actually id say this is in the tradition of rap for white nu-metal brats, but seriously i think fred durst is probably better than this.
iv) production= boring+ shit.
i find it mildly annoying that cunts like this guy can actually sell records when theres people who put a hellalot of effort into producing good hip hop."

to which I replied:

"Are you sure you're listening to the same Sage Francis? The same album (Personal Journals)? By the Eminem thing I meant that all the good stuff Eminem's fans will say about him (that he's funny, smart,
confessional, angry, compassionate etc.) really apply to Sage Francis. He's everything Eminem's supposed to be. He used to do rap-battles, I think he might have beat Em' once, but don't quote me on that."

And my friend then said:

"yeah definitely same guy. as i say i'm basing this on one track
('different' from personal journals) but fact of the matter is why
should i bother to listen to any more? Eminem IS fairly smart, confessional and angry (not really compassionate) but his records are a bit shit since he made it big. This guy may be a bit smart & confessional, but so fucking what? He SOUNDS shit. He's trying really hard to be really fucking original, but at the end of the day a rappers gotta be able to spit flows that sound right, and this guy just sounds like he can barely get the words out without sufforcating(sic) himself. The productions very average.
There's better hip hop and there's better hip hop for you. And rapping about not eating meat is dull."

So I'm opening this up to the floor: is Sage Francis a good rapper?

I adore the Non-Prophets "Hope" album on Lex Records. And what's more, I think he is a fantastic MC on it...coupled with Joe Beats production, it's a pretty hard hitting and satisfying album...

I've never heard his Personal Journals albums, though...I'm basing my opinion solely on "Hope" (which you can listen to on bleep.com if you want).

i think sage francis is a bit off the beaten hip hop track, but thats no bad thing. it may lead to H4t0rz dismissing him straight away as not really hip hop, but i think he's wicked. all through the album i was having to ask my mate geoff "is that still sage francis?", even though i knew it was.

diverse, interesting, and not adhering to the rules.

thumbs up.
fingers too.

and rapping about not eating meat is definitely less dull than rapping about how much you hate your mummy, ala emineminem.
