I don't know whether this should be in Creation or Comics. But what-the-hey.
I'm having writers' block on my Magnum Opus, and I've decided to do something completely different for a while. I settled on writing a three to six part series of comics, not nessecarily for publication, just for fun.
Although it's unlikely to see the light of day publishing-wise, I was wondering if anybody had advice or requests as per its content.I always try to avoid cliches and I'm trying to make it as little like what's already out there as possible (though currently it's coming out like 'Transmetropolitan: the college years'). What is the current zeitgeist in graphic novels? (so I know what not to do) Are there things about graphic novels that'll turn you on/off immediately?

(And yes, I know to follow my heart and do what I want to do. I'm looking for advice like 'something with dinosaurs' or 'like 'Friends', but set in the Crimean war')

Innovation. Telling stories in new ways, from the point of view of unusual characters set in places that aren't on the map, so to speak.

Write what you know about, everyone has unique perspectives gained from their own particular experiences, but do it with a twist.

Hard to say what the "next big thing" is going to be...I wouldn't worry too much about that. Just let the story tell itself, the way dreams unfold into narratives on occasion.

The subconscious mind is the greatest storyteller/shaman/trickster of all. Hand it the keyboard or notebook and try to keep up.

Auspiciously, mainstream comics (pop culture in general) seem to be at their total nadir, both in terms of sales and (perhaps tellingly) in terms of what is produced. So I think the medium is wide open for new stories. Um...the marketplace, though...well...

Yeah i agree. If your really having problems maybe leave it for a while and do something else. Sometimes having a break let's the mind work it's own story out.
