How is the relevance of a topic judged?

* This morning I was breezing thru some of the threads from various forums and it piqued my curiousity. How is the relevance of a thread judged and who exactly is it relevant to? Seeing threads about peoples floundering love life having a rating of 17 in relevance...? What is the purpose of the ratings? What is the highest rating?

Someone, flick the switch and illuminate me. Thanks.

"Relevance"?
You're seeing relevance ratings here, on Barbelith?

Cos if you are, you're seeing something on your screen that I'm not seeing on mine. Which makes me think that either I need a new computer, or you need to get your glasses checked.

Oh, wait--are you talking the relevance ratings that come up when you use the search function? Those, I have no idea. I think it's an algorithm. Either that, or it's magickal number sprites. Same difference.

Pretty much. It's like the relevance ratings of any other search engine - it tells you, in the computer's highly specific terminology, which threads appear to feature your search term most heavily. It isn't an indicator of any absolute judgement on the value of the thread.

To think I was worried that my posts were not relevant enough for Barbelith (though thst may still be the case...!) - Thanks to all.

I like the idea of giving certain threads irrelevance ratings...
