I've been opening two windows, NewWiki and OldWiki, and going through sections link by link.

Open OldWiki page, hit "edit page," select all, copy.

Open NewWiki page, paste, fix links to new format, save.

The "fix links to new format" is the part that takes the most time.

I've done (I think) all of the Donnie Darko annotations, and there are many. I know there's some kind of big thing in the Temple concerning PK Dick, and suspect there's more in there too, although I haven't yet dare look.

The one problem I've encountered with the converting links to new format thing is the realization that the new format is case-sensitive -- if one guy writes [[Cinema references in Donnie Darko]] on one page, and another guy writes [[Cinema References In Donnie Darko]] on another page, those links will go to two different pages.

Thus far, I've been using Title Case format in what I *think* is a consistent, proper way, but I'm so distracted and generally goofy, I might be messing up the grammar. So: Pay Attention to Titles.

I've also started using the "talk" tab on the main page to put notes like these.

Tom: this software is a really nice package. Thanks.

grant - I looked into the possibility of writing a script that would convert between old style internal links and new style ones, but unfortunately without having a list of every single page in the old wiki I don't really see how that's going to be possible. Of course, if there is a list I can do that.

If there are any other formatting things that need changing let me know, I can automate that.

Would it be practical to assign me a particular section to shift?

I think what's happening now is people go into the new wiki and see what remains to be shifted. Which works, I guess, until you start on a big project like the Donnie Darko entries (thanks Grant!) and run out of steam/motivation half-way through. Or run into the case-sensitive links issue mentioned by Grant, and think a page hasn't been done even though it has been.

Copying the old material into the new wiki is just the start though. I've tried writing a new intro for FTV&T and I'm not happy with it...someone add/edit that please.

Quick thought: maybe this would be a good time for Head Shop regulars to start thinking about a proper Head Shop FAQ, explaining how you want things to work, what you expect from posters, what your particular moderation policies are, stuff like that. Something you can point to if problems arise, something which might even prevent certain problems from arising in the first place. An index of all the good threads, a primer on all the big subjects. Reading list. Resources. Whatever.

Because at the moment, all you’ve got is this.

Um, I presume it’s a simple matter to delete and block the “googlebot” user now? Anyone? Only, this wanker has just spammed our brand new front page with his *ahem* 'google-sponsored links'

hmmm... just stumbled accross some interesting WIKI pages...
Barbelith Wiki "RecentChanges"
Barbelith Wiki "GrantMorrison"
Barbelith Wiki "HistoryOfBarbelith"

how does one resolve this?

grant

that's the old wiki -- the new one is http://www.barbelith.com/faq

The fact that that's all over the old one is the reason why there's a new one.

Aaaaand another bot hits our new front page. User: Xaxa. Anyone want to suggest a proper procedure for when these show up, or shall I just reset the page, report them here and then Tom can block or bar or whatever, when he next gets the time?

It’s certainly a damn sight easier, this ‘only checking every couple of days’ thing, anyway.

When you click on the Wiki link at the top of the page it doesn't send you to the faq grant just linked to.

OK, I finally got around to trying to transfer the last stuff from the old wiki to the new one, and I've run into a problem.

For the vast majority of pages, all I can get now is spam -- the "prior revisions" only goes back to around Dec 11 or so, which means if any bots have attacked a page since then (and *plenty* have), then I can't get the original content off to transfer.

There are a couple pages which seem sort of interesting/important that have been (for now) lost to this.

Is there a way to go back to the original revisions for these pages?

OK, the main page of the OLD WIKI has been rendered "Read Only."

Which is all well and good.

Except that makes it impossible for me (or anyone else) to stick in a link to the NEW WIKI.

Which is sort of a summary of what I've just spent the last 15 minutes trying to do, and sort of a roundabout way of whining about the fact that the "Barbelith Wiki" links here on the Underground go to the old, broken one and not the new, nice and fancy one.

Because they should!

Tom, can you fix the link to the Wiki? Given we have new people coming in, it's more and more important than it ever was. I can't imagine that it's too time-consuming a task, that one ... but correct me if I'm wrong.

That’s a point. Tom, if you’re too busy right now to go tinkering around in all the code for the barb - and I don’t know how tricksy a job it is, either - but perhaps a quick solution might be to unfreeze the front page of the old wiki, replace it so it’s just a simple redirect to the new wiki, and freeze it up again. Kinda Bobby Drake style.

Just so you know, on the "Reply" screen here, the links in the message that says Before replying to this thread, make sure that you've read about the board's posting etiquette and know how to format text, post links and images still go to the old wiki. Those pages are still good (for now), but might be nice if they went to the corresponding new pages.

The new URLs are:

http://www.barbelith.com/faq/index.php/A_Guide_to_Barbelith_Posting_Etiquette

I've fixed those two links and now I think I@m going to delete the old FAQ / wiki since it's so hopelessly corrupt and falling to pieces.

Yeah -- Mario's talking about this on the new wiki.

I'm very concerned that the spambots are invading there now.

Good catch, by the way, Mario. It all looks right now to me.

Yeah, indeed. Hurrah for Mario! Nice one.

I’ve been half-watching at the user list, by the way - and I see that page has got an RSS feed, so I hope maybe someone else is, too - and it’s been going up by 1, 2, 3 new registrants every single day, for weeks now. Another 3 so far today, in fact. I mean, it's accelerating. Often these are suits I recognise, but it kinda occurs to me that registration is actually open to *anyone*, not just barbelith members. Which means spambots, but also anyone who’s currently banned from the rest of the board - which is the reason why I decided not to make a barbeblogs page on the wiki, as it happens. Not that that matters any more, because fridge has just set up a proper new blogs webpage, but still.

If these are all really barbelith members, then great, hopefully they’ll start having a tinker and adding pages and stuff. But can I ask, is there any chance of making grant an administrator, too? He’s on the wiki most days anyway.

Xaxa struck again. At this point, I'd be locking the account if I were running the wiki.

Of course, I'd also probably edit the User:Xaxa page into something punitive, but I'm half Sicilian

I get the impression that people have thought that they coudl register for the wiki and get access to the rest of the site. Obviously this isn't the case, so I've amended the text on the homepage of the WIki to make this clear. I'm trying to work out why I'm having trouble blocking users as well, and as soon as I figure that one out, Xaxa is history.

i do have a problem with the wiki.

that's in the 12 steps sense, not the functionality sense.

Xaxa is annoying me, too.

4H has got the right idea.

Problem with me is that, after long absences, I'm still baffled by this place. And unsure of how to voice myself.

Hi. I used to be called aphonia. I'm 33. I'm still noodling around with where links go, how to mess with settings, etc.

It was more a yell of "Hi, some of your people aren't so good at finding out where the answers are. Sometimes we blame age for this. Most of the time, though, I just like to blame myself."

That enough?

Dj_Kali_ma, I think you're not all that wrong about the wiki being a little complicated. I mean, I like wiki's and I still find ours a little hard to navigate.

it's nothing to do with age...erm...unless it is.

I'm 32.

Maybe we're just too old and decrepid to tolarate such major sub-level linkage. I mean, five golly. It's a whole lot of thinking...

So, this is spam, yes? Or a chain letter, or anyway something unrelated to barbelith and/or FAQs.

I feel like a big meanie for instinctively wanting to delete it, because it’s about, y’know, peace and picnics and all things snugglesome. But it’s also got nothing whatsoever to do with barbelith, that I can see.

It doesn't get in the way, or link to anywhere else on the FAQ, it's just there. What does everyone else think, shall I obliterate it?

*finger idly hovers over 'destructor' button*

Hmm. I was wondering about that myself.

Thing is, it wouldn't necessarily be out of place in the Switchboard or the Gathering, would it?

That name seems familiar, too. Jon Harding. Can't think why, but it's early for me.
