So the dreaded business trip is a go-ahead. I'll be shacking up 20 miles north of Boston from Sunday night through to late Thursday, and I'm hoping to get a few evenings in the city. Any one have any helpful recommendations on what I can find there?

Well, that of course depends on what interests you. I myself am a huge fan of the Aquarium, but then, that's my sort of thing. The Museum of Fine Arts is great, the science museum's really cool...

I don't know, there's everything, it's a city after all. Great bars, Irish & otherwise, clubs, music, food - if you're more specific I know my way around enough to make better suggestions!

Yes, there's The Overdraught Pub at 877 Cambridge St, Cambridge, which is popular with soccer fans and very popular with the Boston Demons Australian Rules Football Club (a great bunch of blokes), but I think the one I went to was its older stablemate the Thirsty Scholar Pub. If you prefer a more sober environment, Caffe LaScala.

But mainly I like the sea, the beautiful beautiful sea... but that's because I live in landlocked Nashville.

Hmmm.. 20 miles north.. There's always the countryside. It's very nice. Especially on a bike.

Harvard square (which has a very nice newbury comics) and the garment district are interesting places to wander around if the weather cooperates and easily reachable by public transit. On the practical advice side of things: driving in Boston is hellish; the rest of New England refers to cars with Massachusetts plates as Massholes.

If you're into American history, there can be a lot of intersting things out in the "country." Of course, I could just have a sick sense of humor since I find historical pastures hilarious and the signs commemorating them more so.

the christian science headquarters in boston has this badass MAPARIUM, its a sphereical stained glass window map of the world (Circa 1939) and you stand on a bridge in the midst of it, the world all around. the acoustics are bonkers. great place to check out.

the elizabeth stewart gardner museum is the nicest, most pleasant museum on earth, more like wandering through an eccentric old ladies house (which is was) than seeing a display. but the art they have is consistently great as well.

glass flower collection at the peabody museum in cambridge (near harvard square) is a bizzarre and beautiful act of obsessive creation, highly reccomended.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Unfortunately, I won't be able to check anything out until the evenings. So I'm not sure if the museums or the seeing the country idea will work. I'll be staying in Tewksbury and I reckon I'll be taking a train down to the city at night. The Maparium sounds great. Any recommendations on a local live music scene?

Blechh, Harvard Sq. Awful.

The Middle East and TT The Bear's are 2 good live music spots in Central Sq (Cambridge/Red Line). Also right down the street is All Asia, though since they banned hiphop I don't know what kind of shows you'd find there.

Around my parts (Allston-Brighton/Green Line) there are Harpers Ferry and the Common Ground. They mainly have jam bands and the like, but sometimes they book good reggae shows (John Brown's Body plays HF often).

A copy of the Phoenix (free paper) would be useful as well.
