From the new issue of Adrian Tomine's Optic Nerve:

Ben (the manager of the movie theatre): Gene, this is Autumn. She's just starting today.

Autumn: Hi there.

Gene: Oh, hey. Top five favorite movies.

Autumn: Uh...what?

Gene: I said, name your top five favorite movies. Mine are (in descending order): Fight Club, Boogie Nights, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Reservoir Dogs, and

Ben: Gene! Let's try not to scare her off on her first day, okay?

What do you think the fifth movie on Gene's list was going to be?

I envy you.

Hmmm, I'd say something like... well, I don't think it would be one by any of the directors there. I don't think this person (what I can tell from the dialogue) would repeat themselves in that way.

I think it has to be Star Wars - so the Empire Strikes Back. Still thinking, though.

It could be, but I bet it's all recent. My top four guesses:

1. Donnie Darko
2. Run Lola Run
3. Requiem For A Dream
4. Memento

Ethan Hawke
12:51 / 05.02.04
1.) Apocalypse Now (see The Onion's Area Boyfriend amazed you haven't seen Apocalypse Now. And it would be funny if that came FIFTH in the list. )
2.) Caddyshack (the "quotable" caddyshack)
3.) The Usual Suspects ("clever" recent noir - actually, this is probably it and I'll stop here)

Oh yeah! I've gotta go with Todd's last one.

I think Donnie Darko goes a bit far, but your last two are spot on as well, Matthew.

But The Usual Suspects just seems too spot on for it to be anything else. I'd love it to be Attack of the Clones, though.

Matthew Fluxington
13:02 / 05.02.04
Ah, but Donnie Darko is becoming a pretty ubiquitous film these days. It's kinda like the emo equivalent of Fight Club, you know? Look up "Donnie Darko" in the interests search function on livejournal and see what you get.

Oh, you're definitely right, I see everyone saying they love it, and apparently now liking it means you are accused of "trying to be cool".

But still... this guy, I don't see it for him. Although maybe The Usual Suspects is too old now, just a little. So it could be. The Usual Suspects feels kinda right, though.

This is a fun game, by the way!

It could even be "Being John Malkovich", you know. In fact, if that were in the list as is, I think I'd go for Donnie... but I don't think it quite gels with the films in the list.

Are we gonna have to mail Adrian and ask him the "answer"? Maybe we could carry this on in a different way, too.

You're totally right about the character - his tastes are definitely a bit macho, which may or may not edge out Donnie Darko, and probably even moreso something like Being John Malkovitch. There's a whole separate character who would be more into Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman, you know?

More and more, I think it could be Memento.

I also totally think it could be a Tom Hanks film. Forrest Gump, maybe; "Yeah it won [x amount of oscars] don't try and tell me it's not good!" I'm not sure I mean that exactly, but one along those lines I can't quite think of.

Or a Spielberg...

It's obviously either Raiders of Atlantis or Blood Diner. Why are we talking about this?

I'm getting the impression that Mr. Fight Club/Kevin Smith fan would be more reactionary than contrarian. I think maybe only four or five people here are going to catch the reference, but we're dealing with the "Angry Mr. Bungle Fan" personality type, who values extreme style over all other things.

If it's going to be a super-mainstream film, it's probably going to be either a Matrix movie or possibly a Lord Of The Rings film.

Matthew Fluxington
13:38 / 05.02.04
Actually, he is being a bit contrarian - the choice to pick Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back over the other films in the Smith ouvre is a bold one, because the more obvious choice would be Dogma (for its "risky" religious humor) or Clerks (because it's the only Smith film that's actually any good).

Have you SEEN Jay and Silent Bob strike back? Maybe it's really good.

Matthew Fluxington

I saw Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back in the threatre, man. It's easily the worst of Smith's films.

I think it was going to be Trainspotting.

I'll see your Trainspotting and raise you a Seven.

Man, I can't believe I missed this ish.

Benjamin, it just came out. Forbidden Planet on 13th Street has a bazillion copies, that's your best bet. He just did a signing at the Housing Works bookshop last night, which I almost went to. I kinda wish that I did.

I think the directors are key:

David Fincher - Fight Club (this means Se7en is out)
P.T. Anderson - Boogie Nights
Kevin Smith - Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Quentin Tarantino - Reservoir Dogs

My best 2 picks (I had more):

1.Guy Ritchie - Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels was the first movie I thought of when I was the other four on the list.

2.Tony Scott - True Romance. It was written by Tarantino and directed by the guy that did Top Gun. Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Hopper, Kilmer, Oldman and Pitt. Its horrible. Hell, I think this might be a better choice than Lock Stock...

Bladerunner.

Might not be as modern - but as such it's a classic. It's macho enough, and he would probably think it was quite avant garde in it's way.

(although secretly I'll bet its "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang").

True Romance is horrible? The shame the shame!

Queen Mob

Maybe its Pi
or Austin Powers.
or the Holy Grail

Memento is definitely right up there, "edgy" and challenging, but not really that tough. I could also easily see Snatch there.

Anybody noticed that if you take the first letter of the names of the directors, it spells out F A S T ?

Could it be 'Wild at Heart' by Lynch?

after i saw 40% say "Grosse Point Blank" all i could think was "High Fidelity" w/ the Top Five-ing of things, and it'd be a "clever joke" to this guy i'd venture...

I'd have to second Natural Born Killers.

I could also see "Mulholland Drive," which seems to be crossing into the mainstream now, much like Donnie Darko did.

Snatch? (Brad Pitt is in it, Boogie Nights is "about it"? Jay says it often, Reservoir Dogs..uh...they're "snatching" diamonds???

Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I can tell you this because I know this guy. I sat next to him in a lecture yesterday.

I saw Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back in the threatre, man. It's easily the worst of Smith's films.

no! Dogma is one of the shittiest things ever to see the light of day! and Mallrats is worse, too.

anyway, most of the people i know who would have a top five list like that also loved Equilibrium. it's got guns, it's pretentious, and it has a cult following, and at the same time doesn't actually do or say anything new or interesting that might scare them off.

also Minority Report and Cube should be entertained as possibilities.

18:34 / 22.02.04
A Clockwork Orange

The Folk King Idiot
01:26 / 23.02.04
If it wasn't a back to back mention, I would say Pulp Fiction.
