Oddly enough the image of the Buddha didn't come into being in Buddhism until after the influence of Alexander the Great and Grecian portrayals of the human form. Before then aniconism, or the practice of avoiding images of the Buddha, was the rule.

One of the only rare times early Western culture had any impact on Buddhism.

Wabi sabi; an area you might be interested in. Might not. I would say more, but I'm on a friends computer and he's muddled up all the keys, and I can't touch type.

The Thames and Hudson World of Art series does a typically good intro: Buddhist Art and Architecture, by Robert E Fisher, approaches the subject country by country, more than enough material for a 3000 word essay and a good bibliography if you want to take it further. And it’s pretty easy to find World of Art books going cheap in returns shops.

Er, just checking... next to nothing in there on Son Art, though.

Thanks for the help people. I've expanded most of the chapters now, except Sun Art. But I'm not giving up
