Friday 30th January.

Dear London children, as many of you know I am currently in the process of my last day of work. I have no job lined up and I feel this must be celebrated. It seems to me that if the valiant rapper 50 cent can be shot 9 times, and no less than 3 times in his head, and survive such MadPain than we of BarbelithLondon can go out on a Friday, expecting no sleep and get completely and utterly wasted in a spontaneous flurry of hedonism. I expect you all to be there or at least make your excuses. I have no plan of where to go, where to meet or a suitable time, I expect that such things may be planned after some consultation, needless to say this is not the kind of night where we go to the Plough. However I am open to bribes. I have consulted with some members of BarbelithLondonTeam and we have agreed that there must be dancing. Come dancing. And wear pretty clothes. By pretty I mean insane.

I thought there was a Capitol Soul night on Friday, at the Dome in Tufnell Park, but I'm not sure - will let you know. Not everyone's tast but 'nuff dancing.

I have received confirmation and that's where I'm gonna be. Dancing me ass off. If anyone's up for it, post here or send me a PM, you might have to sort out membership (though mass smuggle outs of cards to those in the pub are not unheard of), don't worry it's free.

Membership is free, that is. The night is about £7.

Hi, I'm a total stranger, but that sounds pretty good. So where, when and so on, and how will everyone recognise each other ? Dilated eyes, strange t-shirts, somewhat luminous grace ? Or, well, the other thing, hanging round at the bar ? Please do advise.

Gypsy Lantern
22:22 / 26.01.04
Gypsy Lantern is all about the soul. So this sounds fine. Not wanting to presumptiously hijack Ms. De Logardiere's post-cable retransmission hijinks with soul music, but obviously, there are worse things in this world than the sudden and unexpected soul hijack. Tufnell PArk is some distance from me though, so I'd need an offer of somewhere to crash if I'm to partake in the full dancing mayhem that is being proposed, which seems highly appropriate given the circumstances. In fact, it's written in some cheap note pad grimoire on my fine haunted sinister mahogony shelf that the only way to fully exorcise the ghosts of royalties administration is through dancing to brilliant soul music.

If I seem a little incoherent, I've just got back from a night out with Ghadis. The effect is in effect.

Alex TARBI: I don't know what's going to happen yet, it's possible that the choice of night won't be to everyone's taste. Alternative venues may spring up so watch this space. But I AM DEFINTELY going to Capitol Soul. We're usually easy to spot at pub meets, club nights not so easy. Normally meet in the Boston Arms at Tufnell Park 10 O'clock or so.

Gypsy Lantern: Bless you and your hangover. Yeah, Tuffnell Park is a bit far from me as well. Going to get on the blower and see what kind of crash space offers there are - will talk to you about it later on this week.

Sorry Anna, can't do this Friday - we're moving from suuny Golders Green to even sunnier Worcester Park. That's not saarf of the river actually, it's Surray darling!

But hope you have a nice time - and are wasted enough to regret it on Saturday morning. - & good luck getting a new job!

And Did we Mention Our Disco at Plastic People on Old Street can be fun, and it's on a Friday. A friend of mine DJs there. May be worthy as an option.

Regrettable Juvenilia

That sounds like an option to me - what kind of choons do they play, exactly?

i made a bit of a mess with that last link:

And Did we Mention Our Disco

Quite different to the soul option. They play a lot of alternative retro-styled disco/punk type stuff. Erm.. their flyer labels their likes as:
"the freshest sounds in town: punk, funk, no wave, rock and roll, fucked up house, sleazy electro or mutant disco. It's mixed up music for independent human beings."

They've played completely different stuff during the times I've been, though. One night seemed to be dedicated to current Gang of Four-influenced New Yorkers, another night was full of 80s punk, another night was mostly trendy electronica I hadn't heard before.

They've had 2 many DJs and The Rapture as guests.

The place is very small, though, and tends to attract early queues.

Sometimes the crowd is very friendly, sometimes it's been snotty media types turning up for the guests.

Can't say what it's like now cos I haven't been in many months.

ONLY NICE THINGS

I'm likely to be knackered, red-eyed and howling, and dressed neither for soul nor plastic... will there be a pre-club?

Our Lady Has Left the Building
07:51 / 28.01.04
Will be working on Saturday so even if I were somehow brainwashed of my instinctual dislike of clubbing I still couldn't come. Some sort of pre-club pubbing as Haus suggests might just be doable, depending on the where...

I would love to come to this but I could really do with a sofa or even just some floor to sleep on afterwards. Flyboy / Anna can I borrow your corridor?!

However I am open to bribes.

What kinda bribe would it take to drag you to Islington around 9-ish?

Nah... didn't think so.

lemme know where you end up... may well seek you out after.

Screw all this, 50 Cent got shot in the head 3 times and though it bears litle relevance I might add that this Northern Soul and Plastic is only likely to remind me of heyho political sadness as per the early 90s and the current era as is the course for the week. So children of the night I suggest OurLady name a pub (not The Plough if possible) and time to meet on Friday for warm up drinks and then we MOVE to somewhere funky with no price on the door. Fuck knows where. Don't make me cry people. Dance dance dance (like Lemar).

I have not gone mad. I have spent too much money.

Hey BiP - The Dome is in Tufnell Park if you fancy some Northern Sounl action. Prob meet about 10ish?

Gypsy Lantern I have not yet secured crashspace for you. Buuuuuutt some friends of mine might be going back to Camberwell so might be able to share a cab with you. Will call you tonight or tomorrow.

Actually, getting back from the subcontinent with jetlag, and then coming to a club to see a load of ageing soulies doing backflips and weirdo two shoes dancing may be too much culture shock for any one person.

Anyone ever tried the Marathon Kebab in Chalk Farm? Free to get in, great people, live music, and the burgers ain't bad either. Pre-drinks in a Camden pub..

Okay, The Foundry at 8.30pm sounds good to me with the possibility of going on to Plastic People afterwards so you might want to print out the flyer. Loving you all bunny people.

Sahara Nights is R n' B tonight and it's all blah8quidblah from 9pm so nogoIreckon but bribes are still good for the grabs.

Regrettable Juvenilia

Hey Haus, Our Lady - I think you both should have my number or Anna's - call me if you can only make an earlier time and we might be able to meet somewhere, maybe King's Cross-ish...
