Doom Patrol parallels in New X-Men

In the begining there was quite the link between Doom Patrol and X-Men - The X-Men #1 was published mere months after the original Doom Patrol made their debut, with both teams consisting of freaks led by wheelchair bound geniuses.

That's not what I want to discuss here- I want to discuss the parallels between Grant Morrison's runs on NXM and DP runs.

First up: Rebis and Jean. Both characters played host to cosmic beings - The Negative Spirit and The Phoenix Force - and both died in battle with the big bads of their series with very suprised looks on their faces, but returned via mysterious eggs found on the moon.

I'm pretty sure there are others, but I don't have the full run yet. Anyone else care to add or discuss?

You have a point there, Jim. Doom Patrol in its inception was nothing more than a cheap X-Men knock-out after all. I also have discovered to indeniable "coincedences" that need mentioning. The first and I think most obvious is Doom Patrols rival villian group The Brotherhood of Evil. The X-Men just happened to also have such a villianous counterpart in the form of The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Wow, take away the word Mutants at the end and it's something completely different. Secondly, the Brotherhood of Evil has a founding member by the name of Madame Rouge (red in french) while the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants had a founding member called Scarlet Witch, who was also the only female member in an otherwise all male group.

I realize this has nothing to do with NXM but it still seemed relevant...

Except Doom Patrol was launched first, by about two months or so.

It's the comic book equivilent of The Munsters vs The Adams Family, I guess.

"THE WORLD, THE FLESH AND THE DEVIL", DP's issue 47 (I think), named after JD Bernal's book from 1929.

"THE WORLD", title to NXM 143
"THE FLESH", title to NXM 144
"THE DEVIL", title to (guess what?) NXM 145, i.e., the "Assault On Weapon Plus" arc.

Well, I think I noted earlier the Mallah & Zahl/Dorothy & Niles/Martha & Ernst parallels. Mind you, all these tend to be the result of Grant's work on both books rather than pre-existing coincidences.

Wolverine and Kipling both get their arms burnt down to the bone by a supervillan. Only one has a healing factor!

I think there's a strong parallel between Magneto and Caulder, too- both want to turn the world on it's head, weave a web of deceit amoung the heroes, then end up decapitated! Ouch.

Those bits in PLANET X with all the metal structures covering New York reminded me of Orqwith from CRAWLING FROM THE WRECKAGE.

also, i think the whole idea of Magneto/Xorn having everything mapped out from the beginning is the same as what Grant did with Niles Caulder, which was issue 57 i think.

OOh, I knew I recognised those arches from somewhere. What's the betting the cuckoos are really Winken, Blinken and Nod?

In the epic climactic storyline before the concluding epilogue story, the member of the group who is host to a mysterious cosmic force (Rebis in DP, Jean in NXM) appears to die, only to fulfill a natural cycle with that force, allowing them to return and save the day.
