I heard another track by Franz Ferdinand on a mixtape.. it's a bit more interesting than their hit single, in that it sounds a bit like the Fall and possibly a bit like the Fatima Mansions, though not as good as either of them.. still though, sneering chanted choruses that I don't quite understand and vocals that'll inevitably be described as "arch", whatever that's supposed to imply.. could be worse.

And I still can't get over the fact that some of them used to be in The Yummy Fur..

Why Franz Ferdinand are successful, a lesson about the UK:

Tommy Steele
Cliff Richard
Shakin Stevens

i.e. the great british record buying public have always had a penchant for crap local versions of stuff Americans do better.

'Take Me Out' gets better every time I hear it, I have to say. So does anyone have the album? Anything else on it this catchy?

radio one never seem to play the bit at the start where everything rocks along nicely before it breaks down. it's annoying because the venturesome aspect of the song's lost and all you've got is the stuttering guitars. i'm not singing it to myself today or anything, but i was day before yesterday.

I have to admit I've changed my mind about this. I've got the album and it is REALLY good.

Which American acts are you thinking of in Franz Ferdinand's case?

Anyone who gets a raise out of indie boys, I should think...

Devo, Wire, Gang of Four (yes, I know)

The Return Of Rothkoid

I scored a review copy the other day (it's not out in Oz yet thanks to label wrangles: they're now on Sony here, not Matador) and I have to say I'm impressed. "Jacqueline" is one of the finest opening tunes I've heard on an album in a while. There's a couple of missteps, but I think it's a pretty strong debut disc; I can't stop playing it.

Love the album myself, it's my favourite *new* album in ages. 'Specially like The Dark Of The Matinee, and Michael is just fabulous in its sheer OTTness. I think, anyway...
