Astalavista is a great search resource for security and anti-security stuff.

This List (from the same site) is a list of how-to books. Try the "Guide to (mostly) harmless hacking" I made my way through the first few lessons years ago.

I would have to answer your question with another question, cottonmouth. What use do you intend to make of this knowledge?

thanks for all the info..does anybody know where I can get a decent and free shell account? and also, the telnet program that comes with XP really sucks, as it doesnt have the same options and commands as the later versions, thus making it hard to follow a guide..is it possible to run the win95 version on my xp or something like that? thanks

As far as Telnet/SSH client software goes, I recommend PuTTY. It does pretty much everything you're likely to need.

Port 123 is NETWORK TIME PROTOCOL (NTP) - *this* is of no real service to you. You are looking for PORT 23 for TELNETting. Uce the CMD function (run) in the start menu and:

telnet 123.456.78.910.(port23) [example]

As for hacking, send me your IP address and I'll help you out

Actually the best thing to do is to set up a mock nix environment on your pc, not just a ssh client. You can download cygwin at http://cygwin.com. Cygwin is a Linux like environment for windows, without the Xserver. Also you might want to check out http://nessus.org. Nessus is a free security scanner/exploit finder that runs on Linux, this can assist you in locating security holes in "your" system. I am stating "your" system b/c using this scanner on a system that does not belong to you would be illegal according to our laws now in place regarding internet legislation. There are also several sites out there regarding the subject, but the Hacking Secrets books that Wombat referred you to, are an excellent source of information and a good place to start.

Oh God you're all on PC's!

If you had a Mac I could actually teach you some stuff, like what you can get up to with Interarchy f'rinstance.

But you're not, so I can't.

Bum.
