Ok I realise this sort of thing generally occurs within the fields of the movie section of barbelith but if I dont find out what this book is called and who its by I'm going to go mad. Basically whats happened is I've tuned into a local radio station whoose main output is primarily classic comedy shows and talking books which, for me, is basically a dream come true however they dont have any anouncers / DJ's and therefore you get half hour snippets of things without really knowing what your listening to. Anyway this is what I've gathered from the story so far....

A man and woman ( a couple ) are both teachers at a school either called San Quentin High or affectionately known as. The man is a huge jazz fan and discovers a pub where the barman constantly plays Bix Biederbecke tapes behind the bar. The barmans name is Big Al and the main man befriends him. Al invites the couple to his wharehouse ( an old church ) where he keeps his jazz collection and sells records to people. He sells the man a whole load of rare jazz records for an amazing price. Later the couple return to their home where they each receive a crank call where no speaks at the other end of the phone. The next day they go into work where in their classrooms one of them finds a dead cat iin a desk and the other sees a noose hanging from the ceiling. They start to get worried. The next evening they receive a phone call where a voice apologises to them and says that the explosion will be tomorrow evening and not tonight at which point they hear sirens outside and open the door to find fireman outside waiting to put out the fire....

And thats all I've heard so far. Those pesky radio people cut it off mid sentence and faded in donald fagens New Frontier. If its any help its read by a man with an english midlands accent which gives the imptression its set in england.

I know I'm going to find out its something crap but I've just got to know how it finishes and I'm working the next couple of times its due to be on.

Can anyone help?

Sounds like The Biederbecke Affar, which was a TV drama in the early-to-mid Eighties starring James Bolam and Barbara Flynn (?). Hugely enjoyable, as I recall. Not sure if it was based on a novel, or who it was by, though. Amazon should help.

Oh, and it's Beiderbecke, I think. Someone in the office just told me it was Alan Plater who wrote it, but not sure if that's the TV show or the novel.

Apparently it's The Beiderbeck Affair on TV though that may be a typo. Alan Plater was the script writer and that means it was most probably written for TV but there's a novel by him called The Beiderbecke Tapes and he's also a radio writer and tends to adapt his own work (I pay him).
