e-number - "the reference number (the "E number") and the English name of all those additives listed in the 3 specific directives"...so I'm taking that the UK has a label like the US, but now they have a listing of codes for specific additives ("major additive categories (colours, preservatives, etc)") to make your choice easier.
I don't buy canned boxed or otherwise packaged or prepared foods. there are exceptions, of course, like dried pasta, frozen pierogies (which I can't find made fresh nearby) and waffles (for my girl), the ever present jar of pickles and the canned tuna I always keep around in case I'm desperate (out of cat food). those things, no, I really don't know what's in them, but I know they're not good and staples in my house so I'll keep on eatin em.
the REASON I try to steer clear of prepared foods is that it's all either filled with salt and/or preservatives and very little actual food. I don't really need the label to tell me that. it's not that I'm some sort of health nut - just the opposite. but I do know that when I'm eating freshly prepared and homemade foods I generally feel less shit
but to answer your question, yes, I do read labels, and yes, the ingredient list and the labeled percentage of sodium and sugar affect my decision to buy. but no, I don't know much about specific preservatives and yes, I probably would pay more attention if I knew more about them. |
