I am thinking of moving from Seattle to Vancouver BC. The US has developed a serious Germany-in-the-1930's feel to it and pending the results of the election this november, leaving the country seems like a good idea. For various reasons Vancouver seems a nice destination. I don't know the neighborhood though.

Where would be a good neighborhood/district/part of town for artsy-fartsy, chronically poor, Barbetrash like m'self to live in V-town?

I lived in Vancouver for a few months back in 2001. Around Commercial Drive (hippish street) and East Hastings is cheap and mostly nice. If you go south of Hastings, there's a lot of prostitution and the area can be creepy after dark, but the rent is pretty good. (I was paying $280CDN for a bachelor...)

There are a couple of Vancouver Barbeloids on here, who might be able to give you better info...

I live in Van, and the neighbourhoods you want to check out are in East Van, Commercial Drive neighbourhood as Baz says, as well as the Main St area(from about Broadway to around King Edward) or Mount Pleasant area as its also known. I'd check out this end of Main first as its rapidly becoming the area where alot of cats such as yourself are moving to, and is becoming what Commercial Drive used to be. The community is becoming more vibrant out there as lots of students, artists, and skater types are out there. At all costs stay from the North end of Main ie the infamous Main and East Hastings district, as its nothing but a vast black hole of drug addiction and crime. Dangerous place to live as well. It has the reputation as being the "worst neighbourhood" in Canada and for good reason. It's worse than the roughest parts of any West Coast City I've seen.

As far as nightlife goes though be prepared to slow things down as the live music scene here had been a relative standstill for many years. I think that Seattle probably has more going for it in that respect. If you dig the outdoors, move here for sure as the setting is conducive for anything from hiking to rock climbing, to snowboarding to what ever.

Anyways check it out as it would be cool to have another Barbeloid in tha' hood. As far as I know I'm the only one. So what up holmes? Anyone else on the board call Vancity home?

Yeah, I've lived in Van for about a year and a half now. Main is definitely where it's at. Main *is* what Commercial is reputed to be. I was stuck over by UBC for the first while when I moved here. I was fully convinced that Van sucked until I moved over to Main.

Another vansterdamer here.

Commercial Drive is still my favorite neighborhood in Van, lived there for three years, although I'm in the noisy hell of downtown now - I'd give anything to move back to the hood - it still feels like home.

Anywhere East Van is where you want to go ...

...but not too far east, as it will be a LONG bus ride to get downtown.

Otherwise, I liked Vancouver a lot more than Seattle... make the move!

Anyone still in Vancouver? I just booked a last minute flight and fly out tomorrow. I will be there until the 1st December if anyone wants to meet up?
