Ryan Adams Whining Into An Answering Machine

It's a recording of Ryan Adams ranting for three minutes on music critic Jim DeRogatis' answering machine about a bad review he had written about one of Adams' recent concerts. It's AMAZING. He's whiney, egomaniacal, and petulant in the extreme.

Highlight: "You obviously have like, a problem with me, not with the music, because you can't refute it, obviously, because it's too fucking good, and you know it is."

The must-hear audio clip of 2004, thus far!

Well, Jim DeRogatis is a fucking tool, I would love to leave whiny messages on his answering machine for the pure sake of annoying his punk ass. And he has a tendency to heavily promote the label that his band is on, and his band fucking sucks, big time; not that that has anything to do with anything, but I really think he's a prick.

Well, yeah, DeRogatis does suck, but that doesn't change the fact that harassing someone for giving you a bad review is very bad form, and will invariably make you look like a thin-skinned, whiney idiot.

Didn't Jim DeRogatis write that biography of Lester Bangs?

I thought that was a bloody good book.

My God, is that the record of how frequently you can say "like" in a rambling monologue? It's terrifying.

This is fucking genius. It's Ryan against the shoegazer. Ryan's, like, a chilled-out entertainer. He likes people to have a good time. You can't fight the music, because it's too good, so you have to denigrate the man. You fucking old man. Leave it for the young men. Like me. How old do you think I am? Yeah, thirties.

Finally heard this. I would love to believe, as some bloggers seem to, that he's having fun with this, playing a game, winding people up on purpose... Because that would make him a comedy genius (he sure ain't a musical one). I love the way this is so BEYOND any parody I've heard of this kind of attitude. But sadly I think he really IS that disturbed. I've known that ever since he said he was writing a song to show Britney Spears how some men were sensitive poets...
