Have snagged a visit to the cinema on Wednesday (check this thread for details) to watch this and I was wondering what do I need to know from the series while I'm watching the film?
I have vague memories of people telling me it's got guns, loud music, spaceships and really cool people. This is all good of course , but a bit more detail wouldn't go amiss .

I THINK the general jist of it is cool guys racing each other in spaceships, although I could be confusing it with another anime..

I know it has nothing to do with either cowboys or bebop, which is regrettable.

In the 21st century, humanity has developed an interplanetary society. Among the lawless and dangerous worlds of the solor system, a new breed of 'cowboy' bounty hunters persue the outlors and crime familys who strive to make a dishonest buck. The crew of the good ship Bebop are all 'cowboys' of some distinction - Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, Ed and Ein the data-dog are set for crime fighting adventures. Cool and romantic, funny and dangerous the crew of the Bebop take on drug dealers, hackers and terrorist organisations.

- Edward is actually a girl
- the dog is super-intelligent (for a dog)

The Bebop crew never figured out that Ein is actually a data-dog, did they?

Jet and Ed get an idea of it, but no, not really.

Cowboy Bebop actually DOES have a lot to do w/ cowboys AND bebop, just primarily in a figurative sense. It's a series that works on a lot of levels, and is as much about creativity as anything else. I could go on for days about it... It has nothing to do with racing. It's a remarkably tight series, thematically, aesthetically, the whole story.

You don't need to know much about the series to enjoy the film, but watching the entirety of the show before the movie adds a lot of depth to the viewing experience - particularly because you know what happens to all the characters after the film takes place (chronology-wise). Like fridgemagnet says, Edward's a girl, Ein is hyper-intelligent - that's about it.

Oh, and the movie takes place before the final four episodes of the series.

Basically, all I knew about the series before I saw the movie was that it was fucking awesome, and I'm not one of those anime people either, not that there's anything wrong with being and anime person, it's just not my bag, but the show blew me away, and then I saw the movie and it was fucking awesome too. So, basically, all you really need to know is that it's fucking awesome.

Seen it now and wow, that was fucking awesome .
Tall people with great hair, fast cars and spaces ships, shooting things and blowing shit up. To an excellent soundtrack.
Everything I need in a film and it was oh so pretty.
I haven't watched much manga, but the villian did strike me as one of these archetypal brooding nhilistic goths who turn up in manga a lot. Not a bad thing and the random philosphy 'is this real' was nicely understated.
Now all I need to to get the whole series on DVD .

Hmmm I can imagine that certain scenes with the butterflies would have been interesting...
Heh but imagine seeing that and then Spirited Away in a double feature, I was away with the faeries afterwards and I didn't have any assistance .
