The Rutger Hauer appreciation thread

ONLY NICE THINGS
23:13 / 03.01.04
I love Rutger Hauer. I love the fact that he has, with the arguable exception of blade Runner, never been in anything good ever. I love teh fact that his website begins with a set of photographs of every character he has ever played, most of them utterly unrecognisable.

But most of all, I love the fact that he appears to be a lovely fellow. Perusal of his offical site reveals a man not afraid to set up a charitable organisation and call it "Rutger Hauer's Starfish". If you send in poems, he will put them up on his site. He may even put up a sound file of himself reading it. That's so lovely. Send him a short story, it will also go up on his site.

Best of all, send in a piece of Rutger Hauer fanfiction eerily reminiscent of the brilliantly parodic Gary Busey fanfiction archive (now alas gone from the web), and he will put it up with a smile:

When we got up on the roof, we could see that this guy was serious, and The Bomb Squad confirmed it. He had managed to wire the place up, and was shouting that time was running out. Would Rutger Hauer be interested in coming here, if he knew what danger he might be putting himself in? What if this guy had waited until the "Bladerunner" Convention was under way, and decided to retire some poor innocent fans dressed as Zhora, Leon, and Pris, before making his way here? These thoughts ran through my mind as I watched this poor bastard from a distance!

Before I knew what was happening, there he was, larger than life. Though twenty years had made some changes, he still looked in better shape than I was, ten years his junior. His eyes were as bright and sharp as they looked on celluloid all those years ago. Fact and Fiction kept changing places in my head, and I wouldn't have been too surprised if Vangelis's music had started sounding in my ears!

The man is a king.

What do you like best about Rutger Hauer?

My favourite thing about Rutger Hauer? Why, that would be this quote:

If you can say something in short,
the only thing to keep you from doing so
would be your dick.
And I am not excluding women. They have one.
They just know how to hide it better.
So let me contain myself.

Blind Fury was nothing short of a masterpiece.

And he's in that Kylie video. Being menacing.

I love Rutger Hauer 'cos he's a child friendly version of Christopher Walken. Yay!

Was he not a wheelchair-bound assassin in something? It was like the best Renegade there ever was.

I’ll happily confess, I may be the only person in the country who actually went to see Split Second at the cinema. On purpose. And enjoyed it.

He was great in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, but we have left out the most important aspect of Being Rutger Hauer, namely, his most well-known work after Blade Runner:

GUINNESS ADVERTS.

Guinness want a man to embody the drink for several years of TV ads and they chose Rutger. Bless them.

As Sallow in "Salute of the Jugger". Man - I love that film. He's so brooding in it - quiet and yet strong. The film manages to combine the best thing about sports films (that sort of underdog beats the odd and kicks at the last minute to inch ahead type thing), the best thing about post apocalytic movies, the best thing road movies as they move about the landscape playing the game - or "jugging" as it is known.

Anyway - I really like it and I'd recommend it to everyone.

....and whe was in Wedlock, (magenta - MAGENTA!) but that was rubbish!

Wasnt there a movie where he gets killed by a wig and dress wearing Sylvester Stallone? (nighthawks?) How embarassing. Worst...Rutger Hauer death...ever.

Nighthawks it was. When it came out, I thought it would be good because it had a (mostly good) soundtrack by Keith Emerson. But it was crap.

I may have seen him on a train going from Amsterdam to Leeuwaarden 5 years ago, but in Friesland (up north up north for the Dutch) a lot of old guys look like him.
