When I first downloaded Some Devil I didn't really consider it to be anything terribly special. However, after listening to it a few times, the album really began to open up to me. This is by far the best album hes released since Crash and if you've heard his other albums you know thats really saying something.

Away from the rest of the band, Dave turn inward and records some of the most introspective songs of his already impressive career. The acoustic version of "Gravedigger" goes beyond any song that I have heard in a long time - the music alone is great, but the lyrics are so haunting it gives me chills every time I listen to it.

Come on, Barbelith. Lets give it up for Dave Mathews, Barbeliths ARTIST of the YEAR 2003!

I guess Dave Matthews is a good Barbelith Artist Of The Year, because he really did do some great stuff this year (especially at the Garden, that was an amazing show), but I don't know, I personally think Particle was it for me. I know Particle is relatively new, but I think we can expect great things from them. They aren't established, so I understand. Jason Mraz had a kick-ass year, too. I think he's well on his way to becoming the Dave Matthews of his generation. Phish's tour was the bomb, too, but you know how I am, I'd say that Phish is the artist of the year every year if I could get away with it.

There is some satire present in this thread. Please tell me that it's far too subtle for my limited intellect to grasp, and that it really is just a joke.

See, Phish can't really be artist of the year because they're a band not an individual artist. Thats why Dave Mathews Band was never awarded Barbelith Artist of the Year before. But Dave, on his own, man he claims it.

Cyrus Jones 1810 to 1913,
made his great grandchildren believe you could live to 100 and 3
a 100 and 3, is forever when you're just a little kid so
Cyrus Jones lived forever
Gravedigger
when you dig my grave
could you make it shallow
so that I can feel the rain
Gravedigger

Muriel Stonewall 1903 to 1954,
she lost both of her babies in the second great war
now you should never have to watch your only children lowered in the ground
I mean you should
never have to bury your own babies
Gravedigger
when you dig my grave
could you make it shallow
so that I can feel the rain
Gravedigger

Ring around the Rosy
Pocket full of posies
ashes to ashes
we all fall down

Gravedigger
when you dig my grave
could you make it shallow
so that I can feel the rain
oh Gravedigger

Little Mikey Parsons, 67 to 75
He rode his bike like the devil until the day he died
when he grows up he wants to be Mr. Vertigo on the flying trapeze
oh, 1940 to 1992

Gravedigger
when you dig my grave
could you make it shallow
so that I can feel the rain
Gravedigger

when you dig my grave
could you make it shallow
so that I can feel the rain
I can feel the rain
I can feel the rain
Gravedigger

Gravedigger
when you dig my grave
could you make it shallow
so that I can feel the rain
Gravedigger

Yeah, you guys. Dave Matthews and Phish. And ABBA and Kylie and Jason and the most commercial song ever written by a commercial songwriter, who is probably Norwegian or Betty Boo, and then recorded at Sellout Studios, RICHmond.

You guys have no idea. You just gobble up whatever you read in the music press, and not even the *cool* music press. Your band choices are an expression of your failure to understand true quality music. This is why you are not hailing the true Barbelith artist of this and every year:

Ryan Adams!

I don't think Artist Of The Year has to strictly mean a single person - Phish operate as a collective artist, which is just as valid as a solo act, especially when you consider that Dave didn't make that record all by himself. Also, I think we need to get out of this mindset that it's all got to be about songs and albums - that's such a commercial way of thinking that it makes me kind of sick. Phish were godlike on tour this year, and I think you'd know that if you'd made the effort to see eight Phish shows like I did. To see a band eight times in a row and to still want more - very few bands can do that, my friend. Dave's show at the Garden was fine, but if I had to see that over and over again, it'd be really boring.

But, you know, I don't expect too much for a guy like you, Bio. After all, you're the guy who betrayed my trust and converted all of those SHN-format DMB shows to MP3, which is basically sacrilage and an insult to Dave and his fans all over the world. I hate when idiots like you dilute the trading pool with loss-heavy mp3s. And MP3s are awful, just take a listen to them...people who claim to not hear the difference are bullshitting, they just don't want to accept that this wonderful thing everyone talked about 5 years ago or so is actually a load of crap!

SHN-format:Betamax :: MP3:VHS

Sure, its better but come on, who uses that shit? People that would consider a collective a singular entity, I suppose.

And dude, Phish are just trying to be this generations Greatful Dead but look at that beard, that beard says it all. Phish aren't 1/8th what the Dead were!

Beards- Go big or go home.

How can you possibly be more ignorant, Bio? For some people, music is a synonym of MP3, it's so sad. As a taper, I don't want MY shows (yes, they are in fact MY recordings since I went to the show, smuggled in the equipment, and taped the performance) circulating in a lossy format. If that means I don't trade out my masters, then so be it. I could care less. I've been burned quite a bit in the past by either MP3 traders or thieves who sell my shit on eBay. Fuck that, dude.

Psshhh. You philistines sicken me. Phish? Dave Matthews? Sure, these guys are alright, but I’ve got one word for the lot of you, and that word is The Grateful Dead.

In any just world The Grateful Dead would be Barbelith’s artist of the year every year, from the beginning of time to the end.

Respect the Dead.

Neither, I think, really compares to Muse, who've skilfully fused the Pumpkins rock bombast with the complex structures and tough subject matter of Radiohead to produce something altogether better.

Ah, Muse.

They are my artists of the year, for sure.

Have a little respect. We've already announced that the Barbelith Artist of the Year is Dave Matthews. This is a thread for him, and music like his, not trendy British haircut bands. I know it sometimes seems as thoug there is no worthwhile music coming from the UK these days, but that's no excuse to listen to any old thing because the magazines and MTV tell you to. Where's the passion for real music played by real musicians who can really play their instruments, people? C'mon. Let's hear it for Dave! He's more of a musician than any of the lame Alternative Rock crap that is being mentioned in this thread.

oh, jesus, you cannot be serious! for a moment, when i read "real music played by real musicians who can really play their instruments" i thought my dad was online. surely no-one can seriously take this bollocks seriously. im not trying to dismiss your taste in music (however wrong it may be), but this pointles, backwards looking luddite attitude towards music is surely the way to bring back the dinosaurs of rock that punk flushed out. Of course thats not to say that punk is the be-all and end-all, cos that would be just as blinkered.
Oh, and that shit about "there is no worthwhile music coming from the UK these days"? apparently i imagined all those albums by bands like British Sea Power, 80s MBLD, singles by Franz Ferdinand and countless other great BRITISH bands. and anyway, who the fuck cares where they're from. good music is good music whether its 3 chords in 2 minutes played by kids, or schizoid japanese noisecore. anyway, i think you take my point.
Oh, and muse can fuck off too, bunch of whiney art school tossers. ha!

Yeah, but they lack the delicate touch of Coldplay. Muse may say "come on, man, create beauty! Live your life with beauty in every straining chord and passionate whisper, just like we do", but Coldplay are more like, "man, we understand why you aren't doing so great on the permanent beauty front. It's fine. We get low sometimes too. You just work your way out of it; we'll take the strain".

I like to listen to Muse when I'm writing my superhero comics, and Coldplay when I am writing my "indie" comics.

Yeah, that definitely makes sense.

Although I'd probably listen to the eerie majesty of Radiohead if I was writing some (non-Goth!!!) Vertigo-type comic.

I think we should start some kind of campaign for real, British rock, like the NME used to.

Who's wearing white caps? I'm wearing a smoking jacket, and rocking out (a bit!) to Paul Weller right now.

Hey, man, back the fuck up. As has been established elsewhere, you only pretend you like black people because it makes you look cool and PC.

It takes a refined sensibility to appreciate Muse or Coldplay, or Dave Matthews. Why do you think it's called "college rock"? Because you have to go to college to be clever enough to appreciate it.

That's why.

Look, anyone that has a problem with Dave Mathews being Barbelith Artist of the Year 2003 can stick it. Maybe you should have got involved with the voting for this whole thing, eh? Did you ever think about that? Don't blame me for your apathy, you stupid Americans. Not that it would have mattered, everyone else paled in comparison this year.

Now, lets get this thread back on topic:

Some Devil is a wonderful alternative to the shallow crap that most artists are putting out these days. After listening to it for a few weeks I began to get a little unhappy with the album. Its almost too good. Seriously, when you discover an album this great it makes it hard to listen to anything else. Mathews effectively robbed me of the enjoyment I would have goten from this years Radiohead and Malkmus albums. Still, its not Dave's fault that no other recording artist was able to match the depth and breadth of Some Devil. Hell, I doubt even Dave will ever be able to reach this zenith of artistry again.

One last kiss one only
Then I'll let you go
Hard for you I've fallen
But you can't break my fall
I'm broken don't break me
When I hit the ground

Some devil some angel
Has got me to the bones
You said always and forever
Now I believe you baby
You said always and forever
Is such a long and lonely time

Too drunk and still drinking
It's just the way I feel
It's alright
Is what you told me
Cause what we had was so beautiful
Feel heavy like floating
At the bottom of the sea

You said always and forever
Now I believe you baby
You said always and forever
Is such a long and lonely time

Some devil is stuck inside of me
I cannot set it free
I wish, I wish I was dead and you were grieving
Just so that you could know
Some angel is stuck inside of me
But I cannot set you free

You said always and forever
Now I believe you baby
You said always and forever
Such a long and lonely time

Stuck inside of me

Sorry, frat white cap wearing idiots means frat guys wearing white hats.

I'm not into Dave Matthews, nor am I into Bob Marleys greatist hits, nor am I into Hootie and the Blowfish, nor am I into Jimmy Buffett, Blues Traveler, or Pearl Jam, or that apple key note guy John Mayer.

What about Sting? You have to admire Sting. Sting is like a personal role model for me. The music that he's made over the years.... I don't listen to it much, but I respect the fact that he's made it.
