Hey everybody...some of you might remember me as the original editor on THE INVISIBLES and a few dozen other Vertigo and Marvel Knights books. These days, I'm writing full-time; right now I'm busy promoting GIANT ROBOT WARRIORS (out this Friday) and PARA (soliciting now for March) -- details on both, among other places, at http://www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com/news/107273925159306.htm . Go there and check out the gorgeous art and plot descriptions...

...but meanwhile, I also want to make this SPECIAL OFFER: E-mail me at stuartcomics@mindspring.com to be put on a mailing list for future projects. Every e-mail from now till the end of January will get a reply with a special preview of a never-before-seen creator-owned project I’m working on with Steve (ANIMAL MAN, GENERATION X) Pugh…featuring his finest artwork ever. No kidding.

Thanks! Have a great New Year's and here's to a terrific '04.

Best,
Stuart

Is this to be considered spam? I feel weird, because I just sent Stuart a PM welcoming him to the forum, but it seems he joined just to put this up here? Then again, he was the editor of the series that inspired the creation of this board. What do you all think?

Steve Pugh is a great artist, though, when he's firing on all cylinders on a good project.

From my experience with him on other boards, I'd vouch for Stuart as a good guy.

Mind you, I'm not crazy about this--it's not really a thread-starter so much as an advertisement, and the focus of the 'lith is and always has been conversation, rather than simple notice-posting.

This is an unfortunate way to start things, but I'd let it stand.

However, this is a textbook case of a post where locking the thread is entirely appropriate, where deleting it would not be. The initial post neither invites nor demands reply, but it does contain information that will be useful to many on the board. For that reason, it should remain accessible.

Welcome to the board, Stuart. Hope you stick around and join in the give-and-take.

Sorry -- didn't realize the message might not be appropriate. Go ahead and delete if you feel necessary.

I'll certainly participate if I have something to say. Actually, I've been reading this board for some time and was surprised to find I'd never registered for it!

Best,
Stuart

Hey, man, when I was a snot-nosed kid and an unpublished writer...as opposed to today, which finds me a snot-nosed grown man and a barely-published writer...I sent Stuart Moore a query letter at a time when I'm pretty sure that DC wasn't even looking at unsolicited work, he sent me back a personal reply and his business card. I was so completely stunned that I immediately set to work on a script so incredibly godawful that even I knew better than to send it -- which is hardly the point! This guy is just cool, and he's trying to make a living in an industry that's the fiscal equivalent of a sucking black hole, and if this gets him some attention, I don't see the harm. Of course, I'm new here, too, sooooooo....

Are we supposed to believe that Stuart Moore would come and spam a board only tangentially related to comics? Has he been doing this on any of the actual comic boards?

I only asked to stimulate discussion about it, since in the past others have made a big deal about putting a message up here that solely promotes a product. I wasn't saying I think it's horrible or spam, just posing the question for more sagacious minds to battle out. The consensus seems pretty clear that it's no big deal, and that decision sounds very right to me (esp. since he's sort of the granddaddy of THE INVISIBLES, which inspired this site, as I said in my original post!).

Heck, I don’t think it’s any kind of big deal, but Stuart, I think having hoisted your email address up there for everyone to see, you can now expect to be spammed (er, I mean, contacted) straight back with pitches from every frustrated wannabee artist and writer on this board. Or at least, from the ones with no shame. ‘Hope that’s okay!

By the way, did I mention what a fantastic undiscovered talent I am?

I've met Stuart. Stuart is way cool. Vertigo was way, way better when he was an editor there. We should be nice to Stuart.

Well, yes. This is, in exact terms, spam, as it is a generic announcement invtiting the reader to seek out more information about a product. It's pretty much exactly equivalent to Eroom Nala's old threads telling us the latest additions to his Alan Moore fansite. Since this is Stuart's first post, however, we should probably cut him some slack, and merely do the usual thing of recommending the FAQs as a great place to find out more about Barbelith posting etiquette, and specifically here, which will explain why Hunterwolf and Jack, among others, are ambivalent about this début. Locking the thread seems sensible also...

I think (if I'm reading the first post right) that Stuart's no longer an editor (he could well be, for...um...all the attention I pay to comics anymore, to be honest), so with any luck his relatively innocuous stab at spam will not net him eight hundred unsolicited scripts. And sorry if I sounded at all unpleasant about it -- I really, really didn't mean it that way. It was more just my coming-from-a-place-of-adolescent-nostalgia-for-when-Vertigo-was-cool gut reaction of like, "But...but...dude! It's Stuart Moore! He was nice to me when I was a kid...and those comics were cool...and...stuff..."

We've been through this, Bio. You can't make bees from former Vertigo editors.
