Recently, I've found myself leaing towards using my right hand more when doing banishing rituals. This is unusual for me, because when I started out I always used the left hand because that was what the first book on magic I read said you should do. I suppose the idea is it's to awaken the old, intuitive 'right brain' thinking magicians are so fond of invoking. Yet lately it seems more right to use the dexter, rather than sinister, appendage, and, to me, it doesn't seem to make much difference. Perhaps, in a way, it even shows how much my subconscious belief in magic has pentrated my 'everyday' 'mundane' life. Before, I had to deliberately use my offhand to wake up my mojo, but now it's such a normal thing to me I do it with my wankin' arm...Hmmm. The reason for all this rambling is: what view do other magi here have regarding use of hands in banishing rituals and magical work? Should you always use the left, or the right? Should you use both (like, if you were using a big Gandalf-staff like I'm toying with buying, you'd have to use both, wouldn't you? Unless you had big strong arms, which, being a wee gurly man, I don't...)? What if you're left-handed - should you then use your right hand in ritual? Is the important thing the cultural associations we have for 'right' and 'left', or is it the idea of using the 'off' hand to turn on different structures in the brain? Most importantly, does it make a difference to you? It doesn't seem to for me, but others may have different opinions. This probably sounds like an entry-level thing to discuss, and in a way it is, but it struck me that it's not one of those things we consider very often, if at all, precisely because we take it so much for granted. Hmmm. |
