No, seriously. Zack Smith frequents many of the same Delphi forums I do, and he seems like a really nice, smart guy--but really, his old column was really, really bad.
Every comics site had a humor column for a while there in 2001, after Gail Simone's YOU'LL ALL BE SORRY started getting some attention at cbr.com. There was one at Savant, one at PopImage...
...and unlike YABS, not a one of them was funny. They were all too hermetic, too dependent on fanboy in-jokes; they seemed to think that simply repeating inside references was itself somehow hilarious, never realizing that simple recognition is not funny unless you, y'know, DO something with it.
And they all loved to rip the piss ojut of Warren Ellis's public persona. There was one called column (it might have been an edition of Patrick Keller's FIGHTING WORDS) that imagined Ellis, Garth Ennis, and Grant Morrison as Josie and the Pussycats. It was one of the most painfully unfunny things I've ever read.
Zack Smith? Great guy. He's doing much better work now, without a backward glance. Best, I think, to let the past lie.
Adam--I just stole your last can of Who Hash. Sucker. |
