I recently switiched to using Mozilla as my default browser. Booting the other day, I found that IE was running again as my default - the only explanation i can come up with for this is that I allowed Microsoft Word to check for online updates. Has anyone else experienced this? Also, I found Lavasoft's AdAware had absented itself from y desktop and the corresponding folder was empty! Any ideas as to why this might have happened?

There are definitely programs which will look for virus and spyware detection software and disable or delete. I imagine some of these also ensure that the default browser is set to IE as it can provide some nice security holes to take advantage of.
The check I would ask you to make first is: does anyone else use your computer? You could also test your Word update check hypothesis by resetting Mozilla as your default browser, and rebooting without messing with anything else.
If it's no one elses fault, and IE still resets to be the default, it is probably the fault of some uninvited program.

Solution (if you need it):
Re-install and run the tests using updated antivirus software, AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy. It's quite likely, if you are afflicted by something nasty, that SSD will pick up something it can't delete. Delete the relevent registry entries and any associated files manually. More help on this process can be found by searching google groups or PM.
I suggest you do this occasionally regardless of whether your computer is giving hassle or not. Safer that way.

As regards spyware removers, can anyone recommend any good free programmes? As aswell as being cheap I am loathe to give credit card information over the internet.

Spybot - Search and Destroy is the one I use, along with Ad-Aware. Googling "spybot" should get you a download page...

Spybot S&D plus AdAware kills most known germs dead. If you have a particularly evil piece of malware you might consider one called Hijack This! too, which is a bit more involved.

Some versions of CoolWebSearch have no known solution, though (apart from backup and reinstall Windows).
