Computer Question

Please help the technically illiterate this festive season. I (foolishly) opened up Microsoft Money last week just pissing around to see what it was like. Found it very annoying that it automatically tried to conect to the Net everytime you open Windows, so pretty much left it alone, barring it form Net Access. However, now every time I launch Windows, Windows Installer seems stuck on some kind of loop attempting to install or configure Microsoft Money. Everytime I shut it down, Installer starts running again, and won't let me install or open any of the other Microsoft Programs. It flashes up an error message teing me I have to put in the relevant CD. I've tried doing this but no cigar, it doesn't seem to find the program. I've also trying unstalling the program and deleting all the Money Files manually but it keeps on running. Any ideas on how to get rid of the accursed piece of shit?

I've been having similar problems (programs refusing to fuck off when you ask them nicely) with Unreal II, cos my PC crashed halfway through installation. Apparently it's to do with shit that's in the registry... if you can get (someone who understands all this electrickery to get) rid of the bad bits in that, it's a good thing. So I'm told. I think it remembers all the stuff you did, but doesn't always forget it when it's supposed to.

You might try clicking on Start, then Run, and typing in MSCONFIG. Then select the Startup tab and uncheck anything that looks a likely suspect. Then OK.

That might fix it. If no, or there's nothing you can be sure you should uncheck, then yes, it's going to be complicated and a little risky, and you probably need to get a techie friend to come round and help.

Thanks peeps, seem to have sorted it out for now. I tried the set up disk in another drive (didn't do this before, duh) which worked okay - don't know why it didn't work in my main disk drive though. Reinstalled it, took off and reinstalled all the other programs that weren't working and have defragged and run all the checks I know how to do, and we seem to be okay for now. Cheers for advice.

I would really have loved to see your puter when this was happening. What happened there? One of the key files in one of the components in MS money was deleted (or perhaps corrupted depending on how you launch it), it then needed to do a self-repair from the original source which is specified in the registry under the product code for MS Money under a value called SourceList. So maybe you originally installed from that other drive?

Cheers Buk, that sounds like a plausible explantion. These things are so easy when you know how. I wish I knew stuff like that. Should make PC revision one of my New Year's resolution. Talking of which, it's probably time for one of those threads...
