I'm looking at getting a DV camcorder to take back with me to the UK over Christmas. I want to record stuff that I can send to people of Christmas/NY stuff, plus record some things in the US to send to people, plus convert a lot of that to smaller Quicktime or AVI files for web use. Who knows, I may find other creative uses for it, but from the way I use still cameras, I'm thinking that being able to carry it around everywhere is going to be more important than any fancy features.
Number one issue is that it has to be Mac compatible, though that doesn't seem to be a problem except with some of the new Sony Micro MVs. I want to be able to edit any files I get off it with iMovie, and burn them to disc, probably as MPEGs - most of the people who might want the video have computers and I decided that VCD probably wasn't the best format. The number two issue for me is size. It has to be as small as possible.
I'm not really constrained by budget, though obviously I don't want to spend more than I have to, and remember I'm in the US anyway where gadgets are a bit cheaper. Oh, and I actually have to be able to buy it and get hold of it before I get on the plane on the 18th.
Right now I'm looking at the Sony PC-105, which seems to combine a lot of good features. From what people are saying, it seems to get a good picture and have better low-light/indoor response than the equivalent ultracompact Canons. I also know it's Mac compatible given that it's endorsed by the Apple online shop.
Any advice, suggestions, caveats? Anything? This is the first camcorder I've bought.... |
