Suedey! SHOT FOR MEAT!

I know I had a better idea for a "crossover" thread, but I can't remember it. But that's beside the point.

I can't help finding myself, recently, just looking foward to new stuff from creators I love. I mean, I might not have even heard any news about it... but damn - doesn't everyone love new stuff? I think it's because I rarely find myself "in to" new stuff/releases, and now I find myself eagerly awaiting anything BRAND NEW!!!, and it's kind of exciting...

Here's the stuff I just can't help but look foward to, however far away it may be....

New Optic Nerve, by Adrian Tomine! #9, I believe. I've heard that it was solicited once, but no-one heard anything of it after that. Who knows what's going on? Apparently it's a big three part story, about 100 pages or so in all. What's happened to it?! Eeeeek! I hardly ever buy single comics, so that's exciting in itself!

New Jicks/Malkmus album! I've been listening to Pig Lib/Pavement a lot again lately... and I don't want to seem impatient, but I just want more. Pig Lib really is a stunning album, and I want to see how their sound has progressed... and I am reminded I have heard live renditions of new material, and that just makes me want mooooore.

New eightball! Daniel Clowes! Mostly because I just want to see what it's like. And what he can do after #22. And because I never get single issues, and because it's exciting. And...and... spring, you say? I hope so.

Lost in Translation. I have no idea when I'll be able to see this, but I know full well that I want to. I'm sure there are more films, but I have trouble remembering them all. All I can think off is ROTK (soon!) and Spider-Man 2...

New Sonic Youth! Because I am thankful that one of my favourite bands is still around, and still making fantastic music. And because I want to hear the end of the "trilogy" of albums (based around NYC, right?)

Well, that's all I can think of for now, all brought on by listening to Pig Lib in the bath...

I want that new Optic Nerve too. It's been a long time. New Tomine and new Clowes would make me a happy guy.

I'm excited about new Jicks, but I'm patient. I know about three or four of the songs which are going to be on it, so I kind of know what to expect, sort of. New Sonic Youth should be fantastic - that new song they did at the last show I saw them play was beautiful, and apparently the other new songs they've just started playing are very good too, so I'm thinking that this one should continue Murray Street's winning streak.

Suede, if I know you, you're going to LOVE Lost In Translation.

What do I want? I want that new Clinic album so so much.

I'm looking forward to the next Song of Ice and Fire novel by George R.R. Martin. It's kind of like King Arthur as written by Tennessee Williams.

Yeah, from what I can tell, it's been ages since the last Optic Nerve. I'm wondering if it's grown in size... hopefully we'll see new stuff from Tomine and Clowes early in the new year. Please? Someone?

I think I got too excited about new Jicks, having just realised it really hasn't been that long since the last album. I think I've only heard a couple of their new songs, so I'm going to make an effort to supress thinking about it so I can be fully excited for it later.

Instead I'm gonna gear myself up for new Sonic Youth!! Are many of those songs new available online? I know I've heard a couple new ones (from fluxblog, I think?) but one of them was from a single. I think this album will fit perfectly around April/May, and then in to the Summer, especially if it carries on where Murray Street left off! (Which is how it sounds, so far, to me...)

As for Lost In Translation, I really just can't find out anything about it being released. I know some people in London (?) saw it. I think this might be a similar situation to the Ghost World film, and I'll just have to wait for the video/dvd. From what I can tell so far - I do love it! - the combination of Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson - in Japan - with the Jesus and Mary Chain in the background + karaoke! That = must see.

How many albums do Clinic have? I was nicely surprised by having them be the support band when I went to see the Flaming Lips!

Personally, I’m hoping against hope that the rumours of imminent new fuzztastic transmissions from My Bloody Valentine are true. Mostly because I’m such a dopey indie-fool, but also because I love the mystery-shrouded mythical superheros that MBV have evolved into in my head: if Bilinda Butcher turns out to have transformed into liquid metal in the last 10 years I shall be delighted and surprised.

Also I’d like Paul Pope to get off his scrawny arse and sort out releasing the revised, revamped, renewed version of THB 1-5. Because the later episodes have been the bee’s knees, but I still don’t know how the story starts. *Gush*, shucks, I love looking forward to things I know I’m gonna enjoy. And I’ve got some chilli polenta in the fridge, and I’m going to enjoy that later, too. Life rocks.

God, they really shouldn't do that project under the My Bloody Valentine name. The broke up years ago, and by putting out music under that name, regardless of how good the music is, they will be dealing with sky high expectations. They are being unfair to themselves.

This will be Clinic's third proper album, but really their fourth - there's a self-titled compilation of their first three singles which in my mind is their real first record. I never think of Internal Wrangler as their first album.

(aside: I was under the impression Kevin Shields was still using the MBV name more or less on his own and at his own discretion - hence the 'My Bloody Valentine' remixes of Mogwai and Primal Scream tracks..)

I too am awaiting Lost in Translation. Sound grrreat.

And the big one of course - ALL TOMORROWS PARTIES! Sonic Youth! Malkmus! More other assorted noisemongering post-indie-rockin' types than you can shake a stick at! Holiday camp!! What can possibly go wrong?
(And anybody else who feels like going, I'm still doing my best to get a Chalet sorted out - I'm on PM and email folks. And if nothing works out I might have to sacrifice my life in a suicide charge on the outer fence..)

Ah, you already know what the music is going to sound like. It won’t sound as good as it did when I was 16, but maybe it’ll be a bit like it for a few seconds. That’s okay. It’s old material, isn’t it? Well, so am I.

But I’m enjoying looking forward to it. I like having sky-high expectations, it’s better than fully grounded expectations, where’s the fun in that?. And I want to see what Bilinda Butcher looks like now, coz when she was young she looked mad. And I like the name, they should keep it, because it’s the bestest band name ever.

I'm also looking forward to Lost in Translation.. anyone know when it will appear properly in the UK? Richard Linklater's The House of Rock is another film I'm waiting for, which is supposed to be out in January.

According to IMDB, Lost In Translation is being released on January 9th in the UK. I'm not familiar with how things work in the UK - it may just be a limited release at first (presumably in London), or it may immediately go into wide release. Hopefully it'll be fairly wide so that the lot of you can see it right away.

From sy mailing list:

Winter is HERE and Sonic Youth is in huddle formation writing, rehearsing (practicing, whatever) songs for new CD/LP release hopefully ready to deliver to the wizards at Geffen/Universal for a late spring/early summer 2004 launch. Summer 2003 had us bouncing around with Wilco where we played the song which seems to be the signifier for this project "Peace Attack". We did two summer ass kicks opening for Iggy & the Stooges which was just monstrous. Never thought we'd ever see that particular group let alone open up for 'em, let alone with Mike Watt as their bass player - surrealist prayers, indeed. We did an unannounced gig in November at the Flywheel in Easthampton, Massachusetts opening for the Casual Dots (new group w/ Christina Billotte of Slant 6/Quixotic and Kathi Wilcox of Bikini Kill) where we played some of these newies such as "Unmade Bed", "Make It Heavy" and "City Gas" and the aforementioned "Peace Attack". And we did them at the All Tomorrows Parties festival in Long Beach, Cali the following weekend.

Yay! I was right. On course for total success in my eyes. Peace Attack the signifier indeed.

House of Rock truly does look awesome.

Hmm, what else? Not heard these MBV rumours, but I'm excited now.
Apparently some new live Current 93 stuff's gonna be available for download from their site, so I'm told.

As far as video games go, well, obviously Half Life 2 and Deus Ex 2. And Rome: Total War. And the Sims 2.

The His Dark Materials plays (apparently the opening has been postponed for technical reasons- I like to think they're having problems with the drunk bear.)

And, of course, RE:TG (the Throbbing Gristle festival thingy) which promises to be the best anything ever.

And in general, 2004 itself... 2003 having been such a shit year for so many people I care about (though mine's been okay, it has to be said) it'll be good to get shot of it.

I'm waiting for Akai to get their shit together and start shipping the MPC-1000 (basically a tiny version of the MPC-2000xl sampling drum machine / sequencer). I've had one on order for about two months now, and the date keeps on getting moved back. Grrrr.

Also waiting for the My Bloody Valentine stuff. I had heard that it was going to be a completion of the Glider LP (which ended up as an EP). It was supposed to be coming out as part of a box set before the end of the year.

Heh - reading through this thread, I feel painfully boring as my first reactions to the question posed in the topic abstract have already been covered, for the most part.

Like most everyone else around here I'm looking forward to the following things: Lost In Translation, the next Sonic Youth album, new MBV material, new comics from Adrian Tomine and Daniel Clowes, more Malkmus/Jicks action, and new Clinic material.

I'm also very excited about the American Splendor movie (which I believe opens here in January), Bubba Ho-tep (I'm a Bruce Campbell geek, and this sounds pretty good - not sure if it even has a British release date yet), Chris Ware's next ACME Novelty Library comic, the Hellboy movie (I'm a Hellboy geek, and I like most of del Toro's movies too), and Grant Morrison's upcomming creator owned comics (Quitely, Stewart, and Bond are three of the artists who I most want to see do more work with Morrison, so this all sounds very good to me).

Film-wise, am looking forward eagerly to "Return of the King" and Tim Burton's "Big Fish". Comics-wise: GM's "Vimanarama", et.al.; not to mention the next tpb of "The Maxx". Music-wise, the new Sonic Youth album is at the top of the list, along with assorted imports from the likes of Ghost, among others on Japan's psyche/noise scene (not they're neccessarily new per se, but they are new to me).

Well I'm glad so many of us are waiting for the same things! Big Sunny D - I could add most of your additions to my own, dammit! I'd forgotten about some of them. Except Hellboy, I don't know much about that stuff.

On a sidenote: I just started reading yr blog, only for you to stop for Christmas! Hmph! Found lots of good stuff there. You get a pat on the back ! Hurrah!

Youth: I think I need to hear Peace Attack now. Now! Uhhh, Matthew? I can't find it anywhere. It must be out there. Obviously, soulseek has decided to never work for me, ever again. I can't think of a more positive thing for a new Sy album... I'm so looking foward to it now.

Malk: I managed to curb my Jicks craving by remembering about the cd I got free with the album. I'd forgotten about all those songs! I really love the first three tracks espcecially - Dyanmic Calories/Fractions and feelings/Old Jerry. I must dig out the first "solo" album as well. Also - has anyone been on the jicks site? It seems really strange, but I think I might just not be getting it, or something.

Now I'm just waiting for Christmas and lots of fun DVD action with my new DVD player... (Tenenbaums, here I come!)

Golly, I just saw the ‘industry rumour’ of a new Frank Miller Batman thing: 200 pages, black and white, titled Batman Versus the Terrorists. Okay, I’m perhaps the only person in the entire universe who really loved DK2, but you have to admit that is a *very* Miller title for a comic. Sounds hilarious. I hope its not just a joke.

Inevitably, I'm currently spending my time 'eagerly anticipating' forthcoming new records from Mclusky and Electrelane, as well as the Liars who, whilst I've yet to hear their new stuff, already get top marks from me for refusing to become another lazy identikit NY hipster band and instead choosing to a. play unrecognisable white noise sets and b. release a concept album about witches and a single entitled "There's Always Room on the Broom". Truly they are on the side of the angels.

Oh, and what do you think the chances are of a new Shellac record in 2004? It seems like about a century since 1000 Hurts came out..

Mclusky - yes! Undress for Success has really grown on me this year, and I'm always good for another slice of quality shouty fun from these guys.

Suedehead: thanks for reading my blog, and sorry that you started reading just as I stopped writing - good timing you've got there. I'll be making my overly dramatic comeback in the next couple of days though, so yay!

You are all wrong. And fools.

The thing you should be anticipating for 2004 is the movie 'Around the World in 80 Days', a big summer movie starring Steve Coogan as Phileas Fogg and Jackie Chan as his French servant Passepartout.

While you're going, "But Jackie Chan's not French, you berk," let me also mention that it has Jim Broadbent, Kathy Bates, John Cleese, Luke and Owen Wilson, Ewan Bremner, Mark Addy, Adam Godley, Rob Schneider (well, okay...) and Macy Gray.

And Arnie.

And Sammo Hung as Wong Fei Hung. I'll say that again in capitals. SAMMO HUNG as WONG FEI HUNG.

It may be amazing or it may be terrible, but there's no way it can possibly be anything except glorious.

I spent a month trying to find a kitten to rescue and just found one a few days ago. He's a nice addition to the house and is impressionable enough to make him a part-time killer/cuddler. Making me smile as he fumbles around like a prince on crutches.

That and I have a job offer floating my way next week... curious to see what I'll be up to exactly and how much the crazy bastard is willing to pay. It'll be a nice reprieve from this corporate cd-rom work I've been chugging through.

Last but not least, Silent Hill 4. I hear sometime in September for the States and I can't help but get a bit crazy knowing that Japanese folk can already have it in their hands. Hexes I will send to Konami... HEXES!
