I know this happened once, and wasn't the best, and I'm not sure if Mordant and Lurid's visit counts as such, but might anyone be up for this? I'm not sure when or where but might this possibly work out?

Just a thought...

Yikes you are thinking exactly the same way I am! Freak out city! See my thread!

... Hrm... what about meeting up that outdoor cafe in Hyde Park that's beside the river for tea and scones and from there to beer!!

Or in that outdoor cafe in Russel Square for coffee and cheesecake and then off to beer!

Princess Louise for beer?

Spitz in Spitallfield market?

Where's close for you? You're still 'round Stoke (if I 'member correctly)?

Why not? Does anyone fancy ice-skating either at Somerset House or teh Broadgate rink and then going for cakes/beer/both? I think that would proper rock.

Somerset house. Oh yes. Or the ice rink in the city - Broadgate Circus or something? And that's only a few mins away from the Spitz if you wanted.

OK, here's my idea: Ice Skating at Sommerset House, followed by a warming pub visit, I'm thinking poss the 30th? Or maybe the weekend after Christmas?

Who's up for it?

Me.

Umm.

I can't skate btw so you'll need to prop me up a bit.

Now, not to be cruel, but I feel that Barbelith's aren't the most physically dexterious of people. I include myself in this. The idea of a mass Barbe excursion on a ice rink fills me with hilarity but I twinge of fear... those skates are sharp, y'know.

Oh, rubbish. I'll have you know that I can go round quite quickly after the first five minutes' clutching the railings. Can't change direction or stop without crashing into the barrier, mind, but you can't have it all.

I'd like to do this if I'm in London when it happens.

Since when has a lack of dexterity stopped us from having fun? Dammit, I'm gonna skate, even though those ice skates squinch my feet til they scream with pain.

I prolly won't be here, but I feel the need to warn you. An ice-rink is the most dangerous place on earth. Why? Because on an ice rink, you can't run, and you can't hide.

theres a rink in glasgow, in george square.
'neds on ice' i heard one pub pundit call it.

Every public ice rink has stewards whose responsiblity it is to look after/support/rescue anybody on the ice. Just as long as we don't go at peak time (so not saturday afternoon) it's fun to wobble about and fall over a lot. When it's too busy it's just not as good because you have to concentrate on avoiding the little brats screaming past you. Even so, the likelihood of anyone seriously injuring themselves is pretty minimal.

Most ice rinks have a bar you can hide in.

Yeah whtevr Bill. Don't joke about something you don't understand. Next thing you know I'll have no fingers left on my right hand and there'll be blood on the ice floor.

This is so true. I was, like, Barbeholiday Bash might pop along to that. Then I read the ice skating bit and I was, like, maybe not. Best not.

oh stop being such a fucking drama queen, you're going ice-skating for heaven's sake, not getting kidnapped by irate gangsters.

I was more trying to asuage Illimatic's fear about ice skating than anything else... and point out there is a non-ice skating option too. I can't imagine a meet not ending in a pub somewhere, so there is no reason why we shouldn't have a party of skaters + skater-watchers meeting everyone else in the pub after.

(I didn't mean to sound quite so serious either. oh dear)

I vaguely remember talk of a trip to the ice-rink on sunday. Is anyone up for this? Unfortunately Somerset house (which looks lovely) is expensive and requires booking in advance (you book for a particular hour). Any thoughts? Or we could just find a nice pub.

I have looked into Sommerset House and they appear to be all booked up over the weekend - and I checked on monday if you can believe it!! Anyhoo, I'd be willing to give something a try, but I don't know if skating can be a part of it, unfortunately....

But Bill, the ice is an irate gangster, constantly trying to trip you up and crack your tailbone.

Skating did sound like a rather complex operation requiring precise setting of dates and synchronisation of watches.

If anyone's interested, I shall definitely be in town tonight about 9ish. I'm going to investigate Bartok, a bar near Chalk Farm station that plays classical music. Tonight is a night called Subvision (classical music mixed with breaks + beats) - I'm waiting to see if it is fantastical or awful!

I seem to remember Bartok being host to a number of Barb meets in the past although my memory is not what it used to be and it used to be really bad anyway. Can't make anything tonight but i'm going out for cocktails somewhere in the centre of London tommorow night if anyones about. I'll post up where later when it's finalised.
