I think you're thinking of Joe Lansdale. I don't know of any Superman cartoons that he's written.
See, my point is that writing the Justice League is entirely out of character for the very icon of anti-superheroes, Ellis. His own words show this:
From: http://giaever.com/op/transmet/warreninterview1.htm
"You've mentioned leaving the spandex-clad world of superheroes entirely.
Ellis- God, yes!
Will Authority and Planetary be your last series within this genre?
Ellis- They will be the last, ultimate superheroprojects. There are a couple of other things that I've been asked to do, really short pieces that I consider doing only because they're favours to friends. I nearly died writing superseries. I wasn't one of those who read them as a child. 2000 AD was more my thing. Of course I'd seen Superman comics with Superman flying about while saving the world for Truth, Justice and the American Dollar. I was about 10 when 2000 AD showed up. Some of what was depicted there was for instance extremely graphical depictions of exploding astronaut stomachs in space, cowboyeating dinosaurs... Superman just wasn't quite as exciting."
Also, his reputation shows this as well, as seen on cbr.com
"Guest stars aplenty, according to Comics Continuum. Look for Red Tornado, Black Canary, Green Arrow (any other primary colors they missed?), and possibly an episode guest starring The Atom written by the world's most vocal opponent of super heroes, Warren Ellis."
I think it'll be a good episode as when he does write superheroes (aside from the embarassing X-Force) it is quite good. I mean, his black and white Batman story is incredibly noce. But... this is definitely something that his fan base would have roasted him on a spit for three years ago (which is a shame as he is far better eating now than he was then).
The man has ranted for years about how the industry needs to wake up and extend outside of steel-jawed super heroes in tights... and yet he's writing the peak of the very thing. Guess he's content to tuck the industry in and collect the paychecks then. Orbiter and the unfinished Ministry if Space must not sell quite up to what he expected. |
